About 18 months ago, my wife installed an amp and subwoofer in her car. Today, we traded cars and I took the amp and subwoofer out. The amp is a Rockford Fosgate Punch P200-2 and the Subwoofer is a Pioneer TS-SWX 251. I know absolutely nothing about these other than they do make the stereo sound much better. Is it worth the time and trouble to try and install either or both in my boat. I realize they are not marine rated. I could mount the subwoofer in the cabin to keep it 100% dry, but again, I know nothing about these electronics.

Any ideas or advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Bennett

The Subwoofer is likely built with an aluminum basket, rubber surround and composite cone. Not much there the boating environment will hurt. In a freshwater boat, an marine amp is not a have-to, providing the install location is thought out. Bottom line, I would have no issue installing these items in your boat. Th question is going to be, where do you want the bass?

I will add here that I just installed an amp and sub to my system.....installed correctly they make a HUGE difference in the sound....it's night and day.

As long as the non marine amp is in the cabin in a dry place your fine. My amp is not marine and it's holding up very well. The sub can be installed anywhere. There's really no corrosive metal except for the terminals were the wires connect

I asked this question also, why do I need a marine grade amp? If it's nowhere near the water? The amps in our cars are exposed to similar conditions. Heat, cold, humidity..

The only difference in "marine" amps is the good plated terminals and the coated circuit boards. U can buy the coating remove the cover and spray all the internals down. All it is is s moisture barrier. As for the terminals. When your installation is fully compete and everything works as uts suppose to. Just coat all your exposed wires abd terminals were they meet your amp with liquid electrical tape abd your protected and done. Sure beats hundreds of dollars for an extra 20 minutes of your time.

I am reading and learning about how to hook up the amp. The book says to go straight to the battery with the (+) wire and then a close by gound connection. Where do you guys typically hook up the ground?

Thanks in advance,
Bennett

I believe that you are reading about an automobile installation. The chassis on a car is grounded to the battery thus, most metal should be a ground also. This does not hold true on a boat as it is made of fiberglass! I would advise you to run the ground back to the battery too. Also, be sure & install a fuse at the battery this way the line is protected from a short down stream. I used an ignition protected breaker for my amps.

Got it! Thanks Todd.

Did you do the install yourself? Looking at upgrading my amp and adding a sub. I have 2005 320 Sundancer not sure where to put the Sub. I guess I can just replace the old amp with new one as long as all connections are the same. Also did you run your speakers directly from the Amp or from the head unit. I assume running them from the amp will, at least the ones in the cockpit, will give me more sound output? Just started doing my research. thanks
