Good Morning,

I'm going crazy with the performance of my 2002 290AJ, I'm the second owner, the previous one obviously modified the power on this boat but it's doesn't quite match what I read on the forums about other Amberjacks, I think I'm consuming too much fuel, I change the propellers from a 26p to a 22p and see much better performance but still not quite there yet. (when compared to the few numbers I have from other Amberjacks)

I have (2) Mercruiser 6.2L MPI, Bravo III 2.20 ratio and 22p Propellers, I cruise at 3200rpm @ 28mph, and WOT 4200rpm @ 36mph. (not sure how much fuel since I don't have a fuel monitor system) this is with 2 people, no gear and 1/4 of thank of fuel. I seem better numbers with Bravo II and 5.0 engines.

Am I missing something here?

Thank you for your input.

The cruise speed sounds normal. The WOT seems low for Bravo III drives. The boat should run in the 40's at WOT. You say the previous owner modified the power. What did they do? Have you done a compression check on the motors? How dirty is the bottom of the boat?

Bottom of the boat it's clean (no bottom paint) the previous owner changed the propeller to a 26p for some reason.

What propeller pitch you have on yours?

The WOT RPM (and speed) is way low. That engine specs out at 4800-5200. You should be well into that range if everything is working correctly. It's either excess drag or an engine performance issue (or a prop pitch issue - which can be checked with the Sea Ray prop guide or checking the original specs for your serial number with a dealer). A 26p set would of made things even worse.

It is my fathers boat, I have a 320.

Check you trim on the stern drives and your trim tabs, I have a 2001 with 5.7 Bravo III and are getting better #'s than that. Some where on this site I have seen a link to Boat test.com test#'s on a 290AJ , might help!

I agree, it seems way to low. My 280 (a little smaller) has the 4.3l's and Alpha drives. At WOT I hit 4900 rmp's and just under 50mph (with a light load).

Is it on a lift or in a slip. You say its clean, did you look at it? An un painted hull can become fouled after just a few days in some circumstances.

Are both motors achieving the same rpms?

Boat sleeps on land, on top of a trailer, we use a hoist to take it in and out of the water, both engines are reaching the same RPM's
