Last week I posted an issue with my port engine not starting. I checked the batteries and they seem OK. Today I went to inspect the engine and I found that the alternator was very warm to the touch. Hasn't been run in weeks. Engine will not start even in emergency mode and the scanner gives me a "port engine not communicating" warning. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Keith

Sounds like a failed alternator... diode pack maybe. Drained your batteries down... disconnect it!

That was my thought - I did disconnect it. Hopefully Marine Max has an alternator and I can get up and running

Would a bad alternator prevent starting even with voltage directed from my starboard engine?

I think the alternator diodes are shot and the starter fuse is blown I replaced the alternator but I am Having trouble getting access to the starter fuse. What engineer would put a fuse that is essentially unreachable???

I've often done that .... right after the sales guy calls from the 14th tee to ask if the project is gonna finish on time! :)

One pint of blood later I removed the fuse. The engine started right up. When I started the starboard engine the port engine died and would not restart. Bypassed the fuse (I know, bad idea) and still n start. Time for the mechanic!!!
