All New - Garmin 8600 Series Buyers Guide 8610, 8612, 8616, 8610xsv, 8612xsv, 8616xsv

Interesting, so as I read this if you want multiple displays in a system you only need pay once for the maps.

If one needed a 10 and 12 inch display you could buy either in 8600 series and the opposite in 8400 series, which ever was cheaper and they would work the same?

Yes. 7600 is like this too. I think for how little extra it is that it’s a good idea to get both with maps for redundancy

Jim,

I received my 8612xsv last Tuesday and have been working with it on the kitchen table to learn about this remarkable device. Emily was a dream to work with. There is so much to learn, I really don't know what I don't know. Do you have any type of "Tips & Tricks" put together that a newbie could benefit from? I've been pouring through the owners manual and just trying stuff.

I have downloaded the Active Captain app on my phone. I have Garmin Express on my laptop. I'm learning that updates are most easily accomplished via the phone and the Garmin WiFi. I have learned how to import .gpx files sent from a friend so that we can compare routes.

One thing that I think that I might have screwed up is I think I downloaded the 2020 map updates. The one update that I get with purchase. Speaking with Emily later, she mentioned that it is best practice to utilize that download later in the year to get the most bang. Ooops. Is there any way to recoup that download? When setting up my plotter, I saw an update so I foolishly took it.
