Alignment Tool

When checking alignment for the drive how do you know if the tool went in far enough. I greased the tool and it feels like its bottoming out and it also goes into both drives the same amount, but both engines where pulled before I purchased the boat and i'm not sure it was aligned right? Is there a depth the tool should reach?

I did put grease on it but no spline tracks.

Tried it again and the alignement tool goes into the coupler and stops at the splines. Is this correct?
