my smartcraft engine alarm went off today and gave the message "limited engine power". shut the engines down and restarted. no problem after that. this is the third time or so during a two year period. the checklist on the smartcraft indicated that it was the port engine. all of the gauges were reading fine. any ideas?

Connecting a scan tool would be needed to confirm the issue with certainty.

I scan will cost about $120 to $200.

If the fault is no longer active they should be able to retrieve the most recent faults from memory.

If you are doing it yourself with a borrowed scan tool and you can’t find the stored fault codes they are stored in the same memory location as the engine hour meter data.

Are you getting any beeping? Do you hear a beep when you fist flip the switch to start the motor?

Here are the codes:

there is always a beep when the engines are started and there was a beep when the limited engine power fault was received. where did you get the table of faults and why do you think the limited engine power fault is missing?

i was reading on another forum that the 8.1 HO engines typically have issues with IAC at about 200 hours. i have 215 hours and that could be the reason for the alarms. what are the IAC's, where are they located, where can i purchase them and what do they cost?

I got the table from the internet.

".. why do you think the limited engine power fault is missing?" What do you mean?

Edit: I kept wondering what you meant by this.
I think I got it.
I said above “If you are doing it yourself with a borrowed scan tool and you can’t find the stored fault codes they are stored in the same memory location as the engine hour meter data. “
If you go the route of connecting a Rinda electronic diagnostic scan tool to give you a definite answer as to why you are getting a beeping alarm and power loss there are two possibilities.
The fault is active. This means the beeping alarm is actively beeping.
The other possibility is the fault is not active. The alarm is not going off at the time you connect the scan tool.
If this happens how you do know what caused the alarm and power loss? Well, the smart craft system has a memory. It stores the most recent faults.
If you hire this done the technician should know and understand this. If you are doing it yourself using a borrowed scan tool I was simply giving you a tip.

Its possible your issue is a bad IAC. Its on the top chart about 9 or so items down.

A bad IAC will cause a 2 beep alarm, the smartcraft system will create a power reduction and it is a simple do it yourself job.

I’ll post a follow up on its location and how to change.

I need to be clear, it could be other things. Changing the IAC for your described issue with no other symptoms is a educated guess, not a diagnosed solution.

An idle air control valve or IAC for short is an electronic motor which adjusts the idle speed in motors with fuel injection. Some motors don't have IAC valves, instead they have a mass air flow sensor. Your motors and mine do have a IAC. An IAC valve is used by the computer to change the amount of air flow. We have one per motor.

Changing the IAC is as simple as removing the flame arrestor for easier access, find it, unplug it, take off two Allen head screws, remove the gasket then reverse the process with the new parts.

If you have the original IAC on your motor it will be black just like every other part of the motor. Your replacement will be shiny metal.

The IAC muffler filter is inside the throttle body assembly itself. You may need an needle nose pliers to pull it out. It may be very dirty and come out in pieces. Get all the pieces out. Gently push the new one in by hand with clean bare fingers.

Note: Part #38 is the IAC. I highlighted the filter #5, IAC #38 and gasket #37 below, the three parts you should be changing. Do not skip changing part #5.

This is for the Merc 8.1 HO motor. Do not use the below drawing for other motors.

Shop around online to get the best pricing. I have found Boats.net to be pretty good but I am not affiliated with them so just check a few places.

PS: a spare IAC, gasket and IAC muffler filter + the tools to change are part of my onboard spares and tools.
