AIS ship tracking hardware

How many of you have the AIS receivers that show large ships near you? How many of you have AIS transmitters that locate your vessel?

Are either worth getting for off shore motoring?

I have both receiver and transmitter. It is like any other piece of equipment, like a chart plotter or radar, it has its place. I find it useful to identify other ships. If you have to call them you know who they are and can call them by name. You will likely get a response if you know who the other boat is.
