Never forget that ttmott is a "steely-eyed missile man" and is far above all our skill levels - COMBINED!!!

I only wish I was his dock mate and could "absorb" a small part of his great skills!

Thanks Tom for your great posts!!

Do you think it rubs off if your close enough? I’d rent a slip on the space coast just for the education?

Me too Ken!

How are you enjoying winter in FL on your boat?
Does unbelievable describe it? We really like longboat key and have been looking at model homes in the area so far.
Down as far as Venice so far and up to Lakewood ranch.
What’s not to like?
How do you “knot” love this? This is Jewfish key.

Ah, but Havana lest you may not know;
It was the wrath of Zeus that decreed the upgrades.
And, underwriter pixie dust that implemented.
My contribution is insidious obsessional order; not some skill level above the mortal as Carterchapman alludes.

Did anyone get to the bottom of where the pictures came from?

I have an ais receiver on this boat (when it’s done) just as the last boat. I was considering a transmitter as well, but stuff like that gets my tinfoils rustlin’

I do have a networked radio and EPIRB if I ever REALLY need to make my location known

My boat has the Garmin AIS800 which is independent of the VHF but uses the VHF antenna. There are a couple of bozo's that leave theirs on in our marina when slipped. My MFD's are always alarming. I have a Carling switch on the helm that when pressed up the AIS receives and transmits, when in the center position the AIS is powered off, and when in the down position the AIS only receives. This drawing is how it's wired -

Tom:
How is your AIS800 receiving its satellites connection? I understand the 800 has a built in Antenna or you can add an external SAT antenna. Mine does not seem to be receiving a SAT signal and when I review the signal strength via my 8616 it shows no satellites at all for the AIS800.

NMEA2000 via Garmin GPS 19X; configured to select the 19x in the 8616.
Assuming your NMEA 2000 network is up and operational and both the 8616 and AIS800 are communicating on it -
Do you have your 8616 preferences set up for the GPS receiver source select? The 8616 should show all GPS receivers including it's self, the AIS, and any other on the network.

Yes I have the 8616 set to Auto on the Source Antenna. The 8616 GPS Source shows the internal antenna of the 8616, VV703 internal antenna (the strongest signal) and the AIS800 (which shows no signal). I will double check all the connections tomorrow and might try to connect the laptop, USB input and troubleshoot.

I will check mine this afternoon and let you know.

I do not think the AIS 800 can send or receive a GPS Signal from the NEMA 2000 connection. I was able to connect the computer to the AIS800 via USB and it shows that I am receiving a GPS signal. It didn't say from which source but I assume it was internally.

What? That can't be right.... If one should locate the AIS somewhere deep in the boat then it has to get the GPS data elsewhere. Rather than set the GPS source as "Auto" on the network select a dedicated source like your 8616 and see what happens. Did you load your MMSI in it?

Yes it came pre-loaded with the MMSI info. The manual states that it has an internal GPS antenna but for boats that cannot get a good signal from the internal antenna to use a external GPS antenna and connect it directly to the 800. See below instructions.

"This device must receive GPS information for proper functionality. The device includes an internal GPS antenna. If your mounting location does not provide good GPS reception, you can install a remote GPS antenna (not included) and connect it to the device. 1 Follow the instructions provided with your external GPS antenna to install it on your boat correctly. 2 Route the GPS antenna cable to the back of your device, away from sources of electrical interference. 3 Connect the GPS antenna cable to the GPS ANT port on your device."
