Wanted to attend a memorial services for a long time friend's wife who passed suddenly.

Had reservations on United to fly from Chicago O'Hare (ORD) to Jacksonville FL (JAX) early on Saturday morning (7:15am). Checked in early on Friday morning. On a whim Friday at 10:30pm I decided to update my iPad app so I could watch a movie on the flight. App updates and tells me the flight was cancelled... no email.. no communication. After an hour on the phone I was rescheduled on American Airlines thru Charlotte (CLT) but for a 5:30 am flight. So after a brief 2.5 hour nap I am on my way...

Get to JAX and head to the Hertz counter. I am a Hertz Gold Club member... Everyone else has a folder in the rack waiting. For me? Nothing. They have to look up my reservation and they do not have car ready for me. I end up in a "monster truck" new Suburban..

Successfully make it to the memorial. It was worth the effort!

On Sunday I go to check in for my return flight... and it was cancelled. Another hour on the phone with United and I am switched to another American Airlines flight. Screwed up my Monday work plans but finally made it home....

We have to fly to Seattle for some medical tests for my daughter next month. Not only have prices gone crazy high, but I am a little worried we will have the same problems.

I had to fly from Boston to Dallas two weeks ago. My flight direct from Boston to Dallas on Monday at 4 PM got canceled at 12 PM on Monday. They put me on a flight through Chicago at 5:30pm which had delays because of weather in Chicago and I missed my connection to DFW. Had to stay over in Chicago and fly out the next morning to DFW. After all the changes and delays it took me 22 hours of travel to get from Boston to DFW. It’s usually a 4 hour flight.

Friend of mine is now travelling again for work. He was telling me how bad it is, all flights over booked, cancelled, can't find rental cars, etc.

Ouch and ugh, this has happened to me before flying from VA to Chicago to connect; weather issues, cancelled/missed flights, spending the night in Chicago.

We're taking a vaca next month to Lake Tahoe for 5 days. We have one of those cut rate airlines so our non-stop flights to Reno are only going to cost $58 for both of us. No checked bags, just carry on. Return flights are going to cost around $145.

Rental car through Enterprise, Nisson Maxima IIRC was about $64/day with unlimited mileage.

We're going to nail down an Airbnb today and they are mostly in the $175-$300/day range.

I spent 17+ yrs on the"50 week a year" travel plan, Noth America, Canada, Asia, Europe. I try to limit my travel to drive destinations now, ~12hrs or so max. Hopefully pulling one of my CCs. I could go check out our booth at the air show in Oshkosh next month, but alas, I have grown weary of flights. I'll let the kids handle it. I do enjoy visiting our grow op in Denver though...
We also have a booth in Nov in Vegas at the MJ Bizcon show (another company), will probably make that one.

But flight do suck nowadays, only a half dozen or so a year for me now. No prob with that.

I used to love Airtran....weekly.

It's incredibly frustrating when they cancel your flight out of the blue without any communication. That feeling of being in limbo and having to scramble for an alternative is never fun.
And the Hertz situation, where they didn't have your reservation ready, that's just adding insult to injury. But hey, at least you ended up with a "monster truck" Suburban, which must have been an interesting ride!
For future trips, if you ever want to avoid some of these headaches, you might want to consider looking into discounts on business class flights. They can make your travel experience a lot more comfortable and less stressful.

I haven't been airborne in any manner since 1984. At that time you could smoke cigarettes in the plane. No real reason for not doing it, just no need nor desire. Weird.
