I would appreciate any advice/ experience with approaching Key West thru Moser and Big Spanish Channel. I plan to head down from Ft Lauderdale next month. If the wind is from the North, I'll stay in the Atlantic. I was thinking about alternative route if there is a strong Southerly wind. Thanks nick

Moser channel is pretty much straight forward. You should find at least 10' of water. If coming in from the ocean stay in the marked channel. Don't take any short cuts. There are sand bars on both sides.

Running to the bay through Big Spanish channel is well marked although not close together. The last time I ran it there was better than 7' of water. Once you reach ICW day marker G55 the depth is fine. Watch out for crab traps. The season re-opened 10/15!!

Also, this time of year south winds are rare. NE to E are very common. I'm in Key West at A&B and the wind has been 15 to 20 from the N since tropical storm Paula on 10/14.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice and the reminder about the pots. They sure get plentiful after Key Largo and I wasn't thinking about them. Sounds likely to be a Northerly wind, and hopefully not any stronger. As is always the case, weather will dictate how or how far I go (or if I can go). The info on channel markers and depth will be useful on some trip, if not this one. I appreciate your reply
