I am wondering what ideas you have implemented to avoid the material ripping through around the buttons?

Hope @KevinC sees this…

On a new install the snaps will be installed right through the canvas and backing - which in this case is typically webbing. The webbing and the edge binding will normally provides the support for the snap. The problem is that over time flapping of the wind may cause the Sunbrella to fray on the top. The Sunbrella is also usually doubled up for strength in these areas.

When we do a repair on this we will remove the snap and sew a small patch over the hole. If possible we will open the edge binding and wrap the patch over the top and bottom side of the canvas or at least tuck under the binding. I will cut the fabric patch out of the same materials using a hot knife so the the edge will not fray on the sides. I will fold over the top edge and leave the small sides on the backing as is. Once the patch is sewn in I will close the binding and reinstall the snap.

One other note- if the hole is just starting to fray you may be able to just remove the snap and seal the hole edge with a soldering iron. Then reinstall the snap.

You could also install a small piece of eisenglass under the snap like they did with the carpet runners but that may make it too thick and I am not sure if I would recommend this. The runners are just a single ply of Sunbrella which is why the reinforcement was used.

I think I follow. Typically how big of a patch do you cut? By closing the binding do you mean stitch it back together?
Thanks - Mark
