I am in process on making a move and are starting to look at Tierra Verde, FL and surrounding areas. Thinking more on the townhouse / condo side. A boat lift is a must..

I was hoping to gain some insight on the boating in that area.. For us, we are big on the day trip, beach, park, dock and dine etc..

For the boat, we will keep our 42 Sedan in NJ which will serve as our Northern home during the summer month. So for Florida, we would be purchasing a 24 -26 bow / deck boat.

Any guidance would be appreciated ..

It's a great area for boating. Day trips, beach, dock/dine.....all good. It's congested all over that area, but maybe no more so than where you are from. Weather is great. Lots of non-boating things to do, as well.

We go every year! Nice place and lots to do. Rent is expense, but a lift may not be needed because there is a Marina within walking distance.

You can't do much better than Tierra Verde. It's about 35 minutes south of where we boat. Nice marinas and right on the Gulf of Mexico. The Inter-coastal waterway has awesome restaurants with ample docking. Fort DeSoto Park, Anna Maria Island, Eggmont Key and Passage Key are all areas to explore on a day trip.

You could head a few hours North and explore Tarpon Springs, Anclote Island and Three Rooker Islands. Much better in the summer because of the sand bars and weekend raft ups.

The waters are fairly easy to navigate, you'll find some congestion during the big holidays but otherwise it's not that bad. Your deck boat should be the perfect boat for the waters in that area.

The congestion I referred to earlier was congestion on land. The waterways aren't normally a problem.

That's what I was hoping. Weekends in the Summer in NJ - the congestion overflows into the waterways. Florida cant come soon enough. Thanks Again

    Jeff,
I am a realtor down in that area. I live on the water and use my 320 DA all the time in that area. I would be happy to help you find a place in Tierra Verde. Lots of condos/townhouses on the water with lifts in that area. Call me after Christmas and I can send you some info.

Passage key, Bunces Pass is great when the wind kicks up, ft desoto is basically empty beach on the south side, but you can get hit by large waves from passing cargo ships, egmont key, I took my 320 to caladesi island, and spent 3 days, 2 nights, and that was wonderful. Anna Maria island and south has absolutely gorgeous water, seems like the further south you go the better Water, but that is pretty far in a deck boat for a day trip.
If you have a trailer, you can go inland and explore the various lake chains as well.

Happy New Year! One problem with the area is red tide. I was just reminded of that because it is there right now, my friends tell me. Can't go in the water and breathing becomes difficult for some.

Algae growth ? We have occasions of that in the NE .. Still has to better to wait that out for a few days.
In NJ we are in a deep freeze... I am talking in the single digits.

We do have Red Tide on occassion but it has never stopped me from boating and I have pulmonary problems.
