While on a family vacation last week, I broke the brother-in-law rule. As in; I let him pilot my boat. Worse, I let him do it without me onboard. So, of course he bangs the lower unit off the only rocky shoal anywhere near the lake house we rented. (well marked by the way) I hauled the boat and there was no apparent damage to the lower unit, including the skeg. Both props had one bent blade each. Unfortunately, inside the unit was another story. After getting the props straightened as best I could, I re-launched to test things out. Lower unit was rattling in both forward and reverse. So, into the nearby SeaRay shop it went. They finally got around to dis-assembling the lower unit today and called me with the bad news. Upper gears apparently broke off a couple of teeth during the impact and metal in the fluid did more damage to the lower gearcase and the inside of the lower unit housing. Both the innner and outer prop shafts are bent as well. The total cost to repair is in the 4-5K range. Shop owner tells me he can get me a complete Mercruiser B3 CPO unit (Certified Pre-Owned) with a one year factory warranty for about the same cost. That is what he is recommending I do. He tells me that insurance probably won't want to pay for a new unit as mine is 9 years old.
Does anybody here have any experience with these CPO units?

I have a 10hr lower unit for $2500. It's just the lower leg but it's like new.

Id check the pricing of brand new vs the CPO.

When i was shoppoing for a new engine the price difference from CPO to new was only about $600 on a $13,000 engine. The details on the CPO also said could have cosmetic flaws, rust and high hours.

CPO is just used ..... not reconditioned!
