My 2003 Sundecks throttle seems to be very stiff, Expecially from 1/4 through 3/4 throttle. Is there an adjustment screw or something to make it move smoothly?

Thanks,

Joey

I don't believe there is an adjustment screw for that. You need to troubleshoot it a little.

Try disconnecting the cables from the engine, and see if the stiffness goes away. If not, try and disconnect them at the throttle handle. If it is still stiff, the problem is in the throttle handle. If it went away, the problem is in the cable, in which case I think you have to relpace the cable.

Normally when cables get stiff like that, they are damaged at some point where they go through a hole, around a bend, etc. The outter sheath is cut and the inner steel is starting to fail.

I find it hard to believe the cable is worn out after only 82 hours total on the hull, but you may be right. Could be corrosion on the cable from lack of use. My 05 Pontoon boat had a throttle tension adjustment screw on its quicksilver throttle control. I thought for sure a SeaRay would have one too. Any other ideas?

You may only have 82 hours on the hull, and you are right it shouldn't be worn out. But if the cable was damaged on install it has been corroding for 7 years.

Also, the other reason I suspect the cable is bad is because you say you only have the problem between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle. If it was an adjustment issue, you would problably have the problem throughout the whole range. When it occurs in just a certain spot, usually the bad part of the inner core is passing through the damaged area.

there is on mine

you have to remove the plastic cover and there is a small tension screw toward the rear and bottom. one screw for each engine if you have twins. the one on the star board side being harder to get to, because of the control position so close to the side window.

i had to tighten the tension on ours, as the throttles would loose rpm's while cruising.

this is based on our 00 310 and might be different. a lot of mercruiser stuff carry's over year to year, however.

When was the last time you lubricated the throttle and shift cables?

NEVER!

hahaha I just bought it last month. :smt043

Seriously though I dont really know, I'm guessing that the original owner never did it with only 82 hours. What is involved?
