adding underwater lights...wiring ?'s

Those look great, so I hope I am wrong about what I'm going to say. On a friends boat we installed the same lights under his swim-platform. I thought these lights, (barnegat bay) expressly warn you not to mount them below the water line?

Well you've got me wondering...I looked at the insert that came with the lights and it says nothing about NOT installing them under the water line. So I then looked on line and both their underwater and swim platform lights say the same thing "Internal components 'potted' to prevent corrosion and 2-part housing in then sealed closed"...so hopefullly they will be fine...

I have the same lights installed under my swim platform, from the factory, e.g. not under the waterline.

I have a good friend that had them installed at the dealer, on a 390 - under the water line.

Sorry if I caused you any anxiety! They look great and I'm sure they will be fine. I'm thinking we need to reinstall my buddies the way you have them in your picture. They make a an awful glare off the surface of the water the way they are mounted now. He was not very happy and this might fix his problem. Enjoy the lights, and again, sorry to raise a false alarm...

But, then again, that doesn't make it right. I have the same reflection, but it doesn't bother us at all. Under the water line at a slip will make for a messy lens. If you keep it on a trailer, no problem.

Good point on the lens getting fouled. We happen to be in fresh water, so a little motion seems to blow most algae and slime free.

I am thinking about adding an on/off contura switch on it's own since I don't have any unused switches on my dash panel. Any suggestions or examples of how you've setup your switch?

Well......
I'm in the process of this installation but thought I'd show some of the in-progress shots.
My friend in the picture made up a SS extention bracket for me but you could take off on this idea.

The idea is to have the lights up and out of the water when the tabs are up, and then when the tabs go down, they are under the water.
That way, you can change a bulb, clean the lense, etc. when the light is up and out of the water without pulling the boat.

Sorry, but this is my first time posting pictures here, so I have to learn how to get them as part of the post...........

Well it seams that "boater4life" is a bit upset with my new inovative design and installation of these water fountain lights.
As he has sent me the following threatening "Private Message".

"Please be advised that Todd Hurley of Hurley Marine, Inc. is the legal owner of this U.S. Patent Pending trim tab light design and that your product, as identified is an infringement on this design.

Please be advised that you may be accessed a royalty fee for each sale of this item from a declaratory judgment action. If you wish to continue to sell this item we will have to agree upon a license agreement.

A formal letter may follow.

Todd Hurley
Hurley Marine, Inc."

See similar post in similar thread. Doesn't sound threatening, just protecting his rights to profit from his invention.

We don't need legal stuff going on behind the scenes on this forum. It is also in bad taste to post the contents of a PM. Any more posts about these "Hurley Style" lights by boaterforlife or seaharley will be deleted. I would like to keep this thread alive but will delete it if this stuff continues.

Wrong thread. Sorry.

I read this entire post and I saw nothing where SeaHarley said anything about "selling" anything. I had a similar experience from back in this thread

http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3279&highlight=dinghy+davits

And this was my resonse:

Excuse me while I step up on my soap box.......

Generally speaking, I think it's a good thing when vendor's visit and contribute to the CSR site.

However, when a vendor makes the assumption that a CSR member who modifies or customizes "anything" to be used on their own Sea Ray will then be going into business to sell and compete with that vendor, and then try's to publically lecture to that CSR member, I quickly change my opinion.

This forum is not, and should not, become a venue for vendors to make subliminal legal threats against CSR members who enjoy working on their boats and then sharing their experiences with other CSR members.

If a Vendor feels that there has been an infringement on their patent, then that Vendor should seek their own relief OUTSIDE of this great site.

The last thing we need here on CSR is a slew of Vendors, or worse, lawyers, breaking in to "tell" all CSR members that any post in the "Modifications and Customizations Forums" are not allowed because "they" say so.

I don't want or need anyone's blessing or permission to modify "ANYTHING" that I "do to" or "use on" on MY boat.

I'll step down now......

As I did, SeaHarley is just sharing his own work and inovations with other Sea Ray owners on a forum.

Well said! The main reason a lot of us are here is to see what other folks do to their boats and get ideas. I certainly didn't see where anyone was trying to sell or market either the lights or the davits thread.

I searched on the patent application in case someone cares to read it - it's application number 20070201238 and can be found at http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html - just search on the application number vs. patent number.

I guess I wont post the results of a similar idea I had....

Wayne's World, are ALL of your posts you are referring to the ONE post you made in the other underwater lights thread?

Well said Dominic. I could not care less who posts about what they might be making. But I don't have time to ward off any legal threats. So keep that legal crap off the forum, no PM's about it, no posts about it. We do not allow any advertising on this site so there is no allegiance to any advertisers. If the Hurley Lights guy is going to use this forum as a way to send legal notices to people then I will not allow him on this site. If there are any more reports of that please let me know.

Pretty silly to threaten someone if you don't have a patent awarded. The guy should talk to his lawyer before doing that nonsense.

Even if a company has a patent on something (which Hurley doesn't), using that "idea" for something for personal use is pretty safe. What's the company going to do? Spend $50K on lawyers to sue you for the lost profit on a set of lights?

Wasn't there a time when Microsoft was trying to copyright the number "4" or something...

Back to adding underwater lights...wiring ?s

Does anyone have an example of what they are using as a switch on or near the dash? Are you just using an open accessory? I'm trying to find somebody that has added a a rocker switch so I can get an idea of where and what to put in...I'm really looking for a single contura switch panel and then where to mount it. Any ideas?

Dan

I am just curious about the legalities here......I understand patent law and the idea of royalties, but what if someone just copied a product for his own use and did not attempt to sell it?
