Well, its late January in North East Wisconsin. Over the next 24 hours, the forecast is calling for a foot of snow followed by -21F without the wind chill factor the next day.

Today, I finally got around to editing this vidoe that shows me installing a flush mount Garmin GPS and VHF radio in our 2003 Sea Ray 225 Weekender.

As a Club SeaRay member, I’d like to get your take.

Thoughts?

Great idea, and nicely done! I did something very similar on my 2002 225WE.

Looks great! Where is your key switch for the starter?

Thanks. It’s in a plate on the starboard side just forward of the shift lever. I had the plate custom made by Tecnografic, who did a fine job and were great to work with.

Nice job! Which Garmin GPS did you install? My 182C has been mounted where you now have installed your ignition key, but I have been thinking about doing the same as you have done.

After some research, for my intended boating locations and mounting area size, I went with the Garmin echoMAP CHIRP 53cv Marine GPS Preloaded with US LakeVu Maps. This unit may work for you in Norway, but what drew me to this specific unit was the US LakeVu Maps, which uses USA inland lake bottom contour data from a business in my home state of Wisconsin. We have many inland lakes in my home state and I wanted the contour data for route planning.

Just adding some funny but irrelevant data, in the United States, sometimes states get into silly political competitions with each other. Our neighboring state of Minnesota took on the state motto the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” To which anyone from my state of Wisconsin will reply with a smug grin “But Wisconsin has MORE then 10,000 lakes.” In brief, we do have more lakes in Wisconsin then they have in Minnesota, but we Wisconsinites have a loose definition of the word “Lake.” In the USA, each state independently defines the word “Lake.” It seems Minnesota has a very specific threshold for a wet area to be officially considered a lake but any named puddle can be a lake in Wisconsin.

♦️♦️♦️Why Wisconsin has so many lakes♦️♦️♦️

The story goes that many years ago, the US Army Corp of Engineers was trying to decide how many river damn created lakes they should build in Wisconsin. With a state governor who was stuck between various political groups that could not agree, resulting in arguing and a lack of progress, the state governor was frustrated. During a state planning meeting the governor stood up and loudly said “Damn it all” then walked out of the meeting. The Army Corp of Engineers took these three words out of the governors mouth as permission to build as many damns as then could then immediately began creating lake after lake all across our lovely state. Now you know...the rest of the story.
