Adding An Onboard Charger (connecting to shore power)

Do you have a place in your gunwale that you can make a board to mount this
Marinco 30 Amp 125 Volt Power Inlet

and a circuit breaker mounted next to it that then leads to your charger?
I think that's the safest way to do it simply

Todd,

I really don't think that I have the space for that. Unfortunately, the boat is in cold storage, and locked down with no access. They will be pulling boats out as soon as we have stable weather. Who knows when that'll be.

Joe, I feel your pain!

surfinjoe,

I just spoke at length (yesterday evening) to someone who was in a position to sell me all the parts previously mentioned (I was ready to plunk down the cash). He indicated that the new chargers that we plan on using really don't pose a risk for galvanic corrosion (they have isolators built in). If I wanted to make it "look cleaner", I could add the power inlet described by Todd, but it's not necessary.

Now, that's not to say that the others who chimed in are wrong. I'm not saying that at all. there are systems that DO require the extra components to operate in a safe manner (according to what I learned yesterday).

Lot's of information. I'm glad everyone here got me thinking, and off my rear end to do my own research.

That's great news (considering I just installed mine last night)! In fact, she is in the driveway charging as I write this post! I installed the Prosport 20A (X2) http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...=true&storeNum=5002&subdeptNum=9&classNum=683

Now all I need is a plug to make it look clean! I also installed a 12" Kenwood sub+ amp last night. WOW, what a difference! Now all I need is my 8' VHF antena and I am good to GOOOOOO!

That's what I am going to do. Only difference is that I will add the correct 'twist & lock' connector. Mine as well spend the extra $100 and have the ability to leave her charging at the slip!

Thanks to all for the advice! Now I have some piece of mind that everything will be installed correctly and no one will get zapped!

YES, it is.
You DO NOT need to add an elaborate shorepower system to accomodate a battery charger, despite a lot of the advice offered so far. They must work for the Gov't...

ALL you need to do is buy this:
http://www.marinco.com/product/15a-125v-board-charger-inlet-black

Wire it to the battery charger and you're done.

Geeezzz...

Awesome!

As a precaution, We should probably keep an eye on the zincs.

I spoke with Beacon Cove, and boats will start coming out the last week of March. yippeee!!! Now I can plan my April.

See you out there. (I want to hear that bad sound system.)

Good thing is that now I also have the charging capacity to drive my system! I will be pulling my boat out every now and then to clean the crap off the bottom anyhow, so I will check my zinc on a monthly basis.

I can't wait to launch this spring. This is our first slip. My father has always had slips at Belmar & MacRay but there is nothing like having one of your own! From what I can tell, BC is an great value! Last weekend, my father tried to convince me to buy the doc'o'minium next to him at island cove(for like $8000). Then he told me that the annual fee's were $1800. I kindly told him no (more like no f*&$ing way). I reminded him that he has a Carver (late 80's) and she does not have many years in her, and that he willed the slip to me anyhow! He didn't get the joke, but my wife laughed her A$$ off! My dad always tells me that SeaRay's are junk and that he would never buy one. He had a friend who had to have the stringers replaced on his, and that makes them junk. I typically argue that he (my dad) also had to have the entire top of his boat re-done as the wood below all rotted. Again, he doesn't understand.

Anyhow, hope to see you on the lake or at BC soon!

I am so looking forward to getting out there.

You'd be upset as to how little I'm paying for in water dockage. Luckily we have a community park with boat wells (ramp/water/electricity/dock box). It's not a "doc-o-minium", but its much, much cheaper.

Sometimes those old fogies lose their sense of humor.

Well, at least he get's me a discount on my metropark's pass thanks to being an old fogie! And as my dad would say, 'if they can't take a joke....U know the rest'

Where is your community park (if I may ask)?

We'll be at the GPW park, south of the "Nautical Mile". This will be our first year keeping our boat there. It's half the cost of where we were last year. this means more gas $$. hopefully the weather will cooperate this year!

Nice! I live in Royal Oak. We have parks, but none on LSC. Sounds like you have a heck of a deal going. Just don't upsize your boat too much. I believe that the GPW park only accomodates boats less than a 10' beam, but I could be wrong.

yeah, and 28 LOA. I had to get a 25' well for my 22'4" boat (due to swim platform). Not a big deal. I'll have to try to keep the itis at bay as best I can (I'd been eyeing an older 300WE.)

I'm sure it'll be a bit of an adjustment. At the other marina, my folks had their boat two wells down from mine. They weren't happy tht we moved, but they understand the economics of it. There are other families we know that keep boats there.

Also, there are no transient slips available.

R.O. is a great community. You just need to live closer to the water. I know of a nice little ranch for sale that's on a canal, very long seawall (maybe you could charge your dad $1800/yr for dockage? - LOL). Don't know the asking price though. In SCS.

I am not a huge fan of transiant slips anyhow. They can attract the 'other' crowd if you know what I mean. Metro does a nice job of controlling things, but not all marinas do.

Oh, I agree. However, friends/parents can't come and visit via boat, that's all I was referring to. We'll have to have other rendesvous arrangements.

It will be rather quiet though.
