We took our new-to-us '98 210 Sun Deck out for the first time yesterday. The boat only has 2 cleats on each side, one at the bow and one at the stern, and it desperately needs an additional one in the mid-section.

Does anybody know a good place to find a match for the existing cleats?

Also, the fiberglass in that area is easily accessible from the inside. It appeared to be 1/4" thick when I installed a VHF antenna. What size and kind of backing would be required for adequate support?

Look for Herreshoff style stainless cleats in the 8" size. It's an exact match to the ones you already have. I have the same problem and just ordered a pair for about $25. I haven't figured out the backing yet. One side on mine is just glass under the helm, the other side has carpet over glass in the head.

I found these backing plates at Great Lakes Skipper. On the 8" cleat above your C dimension is 2 7/8" and D is 1 3/8". This plate is 5 x 2", so plenty big to distribute the load. I'm just wondering if aluminum would be strong enough...

Thanks for the quick reply on the cleat. That looks like the ticket!

I was thinking of glassing in a little hardwood for a backer. The issue is the curved surface, so I figured I'd have some belt sanding to do.

Yes, definitely use some wood (1/2" plywood is good). You can coat the plywood (not marine or PT) in resin. Use a copious amount of 5200 to stick the plywood to the backside of the hull. Squish it down and let it dry. The 5200 will adapt to the curvature of the hull. After it's all dry, drill your holes and use a piece of aluminum as the final backer plate. Don't forget to recoat the newly drilled holes (glass and wood) with more resin.

How flat is the area where the cleat will sit on the hull?

Here's a stainless backing plate a friend of mine can make up in stainless. It has the holes pre-drilled oversize to allow for your sealant. PM if you want any more info...
