Accident waiting to happen

While out this weekend breaking in the new motor we decided to anchor at one of the local shallow spots/ watering holes. After being there for an hour or so I noteced another cruiser who for watever reason needed a honda generator on his bow. By this time the wind had picked up and we had some sizeable chop close to shore. I looked back an saw he had a small fishing boat tied up to him and on the bow of his cruiser was the generator still, but also the extra 25 ft of power cable lying on the bow and 4 small children with no life jackets under the age of probably 8 playing around it. We pulled anchors and left.

Unfortunately Todd the crocodile usually gets the little ones when the adults are responsible for walking them through the stream!

We were headed upriver two weeks ago to top off the fuel tanks with 200 or so gallons of the good stuff. A Mako center console passed me outbound with 4 kids board--none older than 5 or 6-- and not one of them in life jackets. I hailed the boat three times on CH 16 with no luck. I have laid awake wondering why I did not call the USCG.

Skip, two weeks ago just outside Back Creek, same thing... 4 or 5 children, no lifejackets, bow-riding on a 20-something cruiser on full plane. Where's the common sense? :smt017

My wife really gets worked up when she sees that sort of thing.

I'll never understand what the appeal is to pull kid(s) on water toys in the navigational channel of the Mississippi River, during heavy weekend traffic. :smt017 There are so many off channel places to enjoy that kind of activity...

When you see an unsafe act you need to act on it. Don't wait to read it the newspaper, tell them or call the police sometimes people are to lazy to do the right thing. No different than the person doing the wrong thing. Be safe not sorry.
