AC Outlets question

I actually posed this question to my wife... she didn't understand why the AC outlets wouldn't work because they work in her car (yes... there is an inverter in many cars now so you can plug an X-Box or hair dryer or such in while going down the road).

So it can't be a stupid question as there is an assumption that inverters are "standard equipment" these days. Or my wife is stupid...

If you have no onboard source for 110vac, then your 110vac outlets won't work. You would probably have noticed large banks of batteries and if you have an inverter or on board marine generator, your electrical panel will have a mains selector so you can only switch to one source.
If you are just running 100 watts or so, you can get ny with one of those auto-supply inverters that plug into your dc power outlet (cigarette lighter).

WTP
