Finally removed some of the abandoned boats from the ICW near Daytona Beach. This one and 4 more behind it were in the water for at least a year.

They are on the west coast of FL also. Glad to see some progress being made.

Who pays for that? is that the state or the county?

Late last year also removed some boats from the ICW just south of St. Augustine....it is a cost sharing with the local municipality that has the jurisdiction and the FWC (Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). They are hazards to navigation and more than once they have shifted positions with King tides.

Really fun to watch a large excavator with a grappling bucket crush them on the ramp and then load them into dumpsters!

I guess you can see it that way from the life of the boat itself...but...
Most of these abandoned boats are "purchased" by people looking to live life as cheap as possible off of the grid (pre-covid). They do not pump out their tanks and dump everything in the water. When they have had enough or some damage occurs to the boat that they cannot fix, they simply walk away.

Boat sinks or worse is partially submerged and then you come along with your boat enjoying the day and hit your props causing serious damage to shafts and props and it comes out of your pocket.

I now this as a USCG Captain operating in this area and I see Seatow and TowBoatUS having to assist responsible boat owners who have hit these unmarked wrecks.

The last registered owner should be responsible for the disposal of the boat and if they sold it they should have paperwork on who they sold it to so the community could go after that party.

I 100% agree....however, my experience has been that the boat has changed hands several times (cash) and the boat is never re-registered. Many times these boats are bought at auction/salvage and not registered by the new owner so realistically you cannot go after the last known registered owner.
