A week in the Gulf islands

Great pictures and narration as usual Todd. The tourism council for the PAC NW ought to pay you for being such a good spokesperson.

I want to see the pacific northwest by boat very badly. The scenery is just beautiful. I also have a cousin who I haven't seen in 40 years that lives on Whidbey Island and my wifes cousin also has a place in Seattle that overlooks the water........maybe that would be a good reason to go.:smt038

Let me know when you're ready Dave. I'll take you for a cruise.

Nice pics Todd. crabs look yummy. I just bought a trap and hope to use it this weekend. Blue crabs up here. If I can figure out how to keep the eels from eating the bait, i'll be good to go.

I'm not sure about the eels. We get the large seastars that enter the pot. When that happens the crab won't come around.
What kind of bait box or bag do you use. I have a mesh bag that works well. Maybe you want something with a less open mesh to contain the bait but let the aroma/oils of your bait out?

the bait thinghy is built into the trap. a bag is a better idea. It's a crappy crab trap. basically two doors flop down, then when you pull it up, it closes the doors hopefully with crabs inside. I've been watching people catch crabs all week and I couldn't take it any longer, so I bought the first trap I could find.

You can see the pot I have hanging from the bow. It has a door on each side that allows the crabs to enter but won't swing out for them to escape. They work well. I would really like to get a couple of these 'Flex fold' stainless traps. The stow very nicely in a bag. They are made of stainless and fish very well I'm told.
They're not cheap though.

I may have dinghied past you and your cousin on Sunday the 8th. I saw 2 SeaRays, stern to stern, sharing a slip on C or D dock in Sidney. We were in Sidney on F dock and were getting ready to head North to Desolation. Unfortunately, our neighbors called Sunday evening to tell us one of the garage doors were open. Turns out the house was burglarized. We left Sidney Monday morning, cleared customs at Roche Hbr., and then headed back to Everett, then the drive over the pass to Yakima. We spent a week of my vacation getting locks re-keyed (they stole every key in the house), a burglar alarm installed, and taking some measure of what was stolen. They got silverware, jewelry, flatscreen tv's, surround sound receivers, dvd's, cd's, and every tool I own. We're back on the boat for another week but needless to say the vacation has been pretty much ruined. Oh well, it's only stuff, and it is insured.

Man. I'm sorry to hear that. That's a huge hassle and unsettling for sure. I hope you can make the most of your last week. Next summer it sounds like there is quite a large group here that wants to do a Desolation cruise and a few others from a local site. Stay tuned and PM me if you'd like to join us on the local site.
