The Boston Globe reports, "Up to 64 Dartmouth College students — including some athletes — could face suspension or other disciplinary action for cheating in a... class this past fall."

And the class they cheated was?

Drum roll please???

"Ethics"

"Dartmouth officials said students implicated in the cheating scandal misrepresented their attendance and participation in the undergraduate course, “Sports, Ethics & Religion.”

The professor, "Balmer said he considered failing students who he believed had cheated, but decided instead to lower their final grade by one letter."

Really, you don't think they failed an "ethics" class?

To fail them could possibly violate their civil rights and demean them. Everyone gets a trophy.......no losers here.

Seems like evryday I have to "reconvince" myself that honor, truth, and ethics are good traits to have. Seems more and more I steer away from the general public, and the new normal.....selfishness. The me me generation is killing me. I did an impromptu research test. I stood at the door of a store, and opened the door for people. Most people just looked at me funny, few said thank you, and worse yet, some never even acknowledged my existance (pretty women).

Doesn't change a thing in the grand scheme of things, just confirms my thoughts. BUT, if you let these folks ruin your day, they have won. What I also realize, is that these are the same people whom are sweet and wonderful to people they know. That is why, these selfish people don't realize they are the selfish people! Lol

Aw c'mon guys, don't you think you're being a bit harsh on these poor college dummies. I mean, REALLY! We live in a world of "Situational Ethics". You know what I'm talking about. The ethics of the moment are dictated by the situation at the moment. If you can easily get ahead of the next dummy by stretching the ethical limits a bit, well who cares? Who's to know if I just take a peek at the test paper of the guy sitting next to me? Who does it hurt? It doesn't hurt him because he's already answered the question that stumped me. It doesn't hurt the rest of the class because they're probably (no, make that "prolly"--today's new English) doing the same thing.

Let's face it, these college dummies cheated their way through K-12 and were just passed on from grade to grade because of their athletic prowess or because they were nice kids. C'mon, aren't all kids nice? Look at the descriptions of the kids their mamas give when the cops shot the poor dummy just because he was holding up a drug store while armed with a stolen handgun.

"He was such a nice kid. Always helping people and everybody loved him." is what his mama said to the reporters who were writing the "White Cop Shoots Black Teenager" story.

Now I don't mean to turn this into a racially based post, I could have inserted any ethnic group into that story title, but the White vs Black thing seems to be in all the papers these days.

It's our country's pattern of patting these little juvenile delinquents on the butt when they come back to court for their fourth or fifth serious offense, rather than sticking them in the juvenile jails where they belong.

And now I'll step down off my soap box. Have a good day y'all.

Help me out here. Are there degrees of ethics? The cheaters are surely not ethical. But does the prof not have the responsibility to ensure guilt prior to imposing punishment?

I thought that was how things worked.

Suspension....HAHAHAHA....That's funny right there. I don't care who you are. Dartmouth is 33K per semester. Suspend 64 kids and you just kissed $2.1Million good bye. Sure they'll get it later, but money now is better than money later.

The original post was about cheaters in college. No matter how they got there that's a different slice of life than what your ranting about. You right away bring up 'black', 'athletic prowess', 'holding up a drugstore', 'stolen handgun', and 'their mamas', then tried to cover your a$$ with that disclaimer 'I don't mean to turn this into a racially based post'. AWwwww come on.:smt043

So I guess it fits right in, "no honor" in the truth, uh. "Everybody gets a trophy!"

As the husband of a teacher....the fact that they cheated or thought to have cheated, is enough for a complete investigation. Into both the students and the instructor who let them off the hook! All graders those involved should be held until the end of that investigation

Is that what you get out of that article? It'll be interesting to hear the outcome when it's over, this from the posted article....doesn't look like they'll all get a trophy to me.

Some of the students have been found in violation of the school’s honor code and have been told they will be suspended for one term, a college official with knowledge of the proceedings said.

Balmer said he initially suspected 43 of the class’s 280-some students of cheating. The matter was taken up by Dartmouth’s judicial affairs office, which launched an investigation. More students came forward to say they had participated in the practice, he said, and the number of students facing judicial hearings grew to 64.

College spokeswoman Diana Lawrence declined to say how many of the 64 formally have been found in violation of the honor code or what punishment they might face, because not all of the students have had an initial hearing and those who have could still appeal their ruling.

I have no idea what the hell you are talking about?
Is sarcasm beyond your grasp?
I mean it was an "ethics" class, and as much as anyone will admit it, this complete everyone gets a trophy concept has not helped our society one iota.
I suppose honesty and honor are now mutually exclusive. Thanks to this thread I believe I now have a better understanding of the recent Ferguson, NYC and other debacles better.

Woody, I guess I should have given a better explanation of where my post was going. My agenda in that post was that this likely didn't start with that class. It likely started in the "formative years" of these college dummies when they were passed from grade to grade without really being held accountable for learning the material they were tasked with learning.

Some of those who were not held accountable went to college, some dropped out of high school, some dropped out prior to high school. And I'm not specifically referring to that class at Dartmouth. I'm referring in general to that age group. You know, the one where everyone got a trophy, nobody was held to the high standard required to win a trophy in previous generations.

We've dumbed down our schools and lowered our expectations to a point where everybody passes, everybody gets a trophy, everybody gets a pat on the butt when they commit a crime until they finally commit a big enough crime that it lands their butt in prison.

As I said in my prior post, my reference to race was only because that's what is in the news right now.

We just went through that in our school system, they dumbed down some course content and modified grading. The stated purpose was to recognize all folks weren't created equal in abilities and therefore denying a high school diploma would be damaging to their esteem and future job prospects. To some degree I suppose this could actually be true but I suspect the bigger reason is to prevent dropouts, keep enrollment numbers and graduate numbers up which relates directly to incoming dollars.

Apparently I didn't understand what you were talking about either....my apologies if I ruffled feathers. Is 'ethncis class' more sarcasm?:smt043
