A piece of crap is a piece of crap (frustrated with my windlass)

I have found that the rope-chain splice is good for about 2-3 years. Rather than cutting off large segments of 'bad' rope, I usually just swap the ends and splice the chain on the 'new' end. Then on the next cycle (now 5-6 years) its time for a new rode anyway.

Just, Also Another thing to do. Soaked the rope in fabric Softner made the rope soft and able to grab beater. Good luck. JG

I've heard a lot of guys say they've gone to 8-plait and it has stopped the hockling problem.
I'd be interested in hearing if anyone here has made that change with their windlass.

I have the same problem with hockling, but part of that is due to the fact that my anchor locker isn't as deep as it needs to be, and part of it is the damn three-strand. Good says they'll void the warranty if I use anything but THEIR rode...screw 'em.

I have gone to 8 plait. It lays much flatter and is less jam prone. No kinks at all. It does however seem to slip a little more when it is wet. But, so far, I like the overall effect better than three strand.

I swapped to 8-plait this winter. I've only anchored a few times but it has worked flawlessly so far. I bought mine already spliced to the chain. I've done the chain splice on 3-strand and its pretty easy but I hear the 8-plait is much harder. Guess I'll find out in a couple of years.

I bought my 8-plait prespliced as well.

Anyone want to buy 300' of nearly new 9/16" three-strand rode with 10' of chain? That's my other gripe- Good only splices 10' of chain onto their rodes- should be more like 30'...

Ive got the exact same windless on my boat, and I agree this thing is a piece of crap. Ive somehow managed to get mine jammed yesterday while pulling up the anchor. Ive also somehow managed to misplace the clutch handle which i was hoping to use to release the rode (although I'm not sure if thats even the right step to release the jam).

1. Will loosening the clutch release the jam or should I be trying something else?
2. If I have to buy a new handle to release the clutch, are these standard sizes that I can pick up at a local West Marine? Or will I need to order a replacement specific to my unit?

Thanks,
