Mine is no exception. Went for a cruise last Friday and saw that the port tach was on leave of absence. Also found we had an exhaust leak on the starboard engine as a week earlier, I replaced the turbo. So came back to the dock for the investigation. Next morning, found the V-clamp between the turbo and exhaust elbow was not sealing well enough. Took it all apart, cleaned all surfaces and reclamped the clamp tighter this time. All seems good running at idle speed.

Noticed that on both engines, on the exhaust mixing elbows, there were small dots of rust on them. Not good! Remove the starboard elbow and looked inside to find that there was not much life left. So ordered two S.S. elbows from HDI Marine Tuesday and received them today. Had them installed in a few hours.

Now back to the tachs. Researched them and found info that they got their signal from the alternators. Wrong! More research showed my engine have senders that are reading off the flywheel. Lots of cleaning, new spade connectors and heat shrink. I now have both tachs working again.

Hopefully, next week will have new timing belts and all valves adjusted. About time for both jobs to be done, but I'm call a service tech for these repairs. Will be looking over his shoulder for the education!

Calm seas,

Dennis
