Luke and I headed out today. A foggy cold morning yielded to clearing, sunny kies and calm seas. We drug some frozen herring around in a futile attempt to catch some salmon, but it was just fine. We had a great time just hanging out and enjoying absolutely the calmest I've seen the sound. We headed straight from Everett to Columbia Beach, south of the Clinton side of the ferry.

From there we stopped and I rigged up two poles.
We tried to stay in about 120feet of water until we got to Posession point on the South side of Whidbey Island.
A group of sailboats were racing in a 1/2 knot wind at the green can at Possesion.

It was so perfectly flat that I didn't really care if we were catching fish or not and we continued south towards Kingston.

It was a blast and we turned around halfway to Kingston and ran up to Shipwreck to try again. No Luck

We were out from 11ish to around 5:30 or so. A great day.

You bet.
Here's a shot of the GPS to show you guys on the East coast or don't see these kinds of depths what is pretty common around here.

Luke decided to throw a piece of bread from his sandwich to the SeaGulls.

He quickly learned that they don't just go away after you give them a bite.

We see those depths off the SE coast of Florida starting about 5 miles out...it then drops to 4 digits after that before the Bahama Bank gets to be a factor. I guess the Gulfstream has cut a big ditch in the ocean floor over the last million years or so.

I saw that depth on the 270 once...we had to replace the transducer!

Great pictures Todd, how cold was the water at the surface?

In my tour guide mode, when I get in the middle of the sound (Long Island) I tell people "this is the deep part 100 Ft"!
Wow - This is nothing compared to where you are. That looked like a great trip.

Doesn't get much better than that.. Fish or no Fish. I need about a another month before my son and I can do the same. Nice Pictures

Great pics. Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a great day.

Hey Todd those are great pictures.

I can't wait to get out next month and I will do the same with my GPS. However mine will be shown in single digits in the middle of our bay. What a difference!

There are a few spots that it does get over 1000' deep.

I would freak out in single digits. There are too many rocks around here that if you're in that depth that you'd be on eggshells.

Awesome Todd!

I look forward to when my son is old enough to go for a ride and actually enjoy it. I think by next summer. He is 3, so right now his attention span is a bit limited.

The daughters would rather stay home and do nails, call their friends or read Tiger Beat. Damn Jonas Brothers.

Luke's always loved maps. He's into figuring out where we are on the GPS and asking where other stuff is.

For your little guy, get him a state map or city map (or even his own paper chart) that he can "tell Daddy where you are".
It will peak his interest and even at 3 you two can get into a boys day out.
I took the twins out by myself several times since they were 1. It's always fun when it's just Daddy's rules.

Go have a good time. He'll love it.

re: map reading @3 - agreed, my 3 boys were all reading maps at that age! We'd give them those maps from tourist places to start with when they were that age, they loved reading them! After that, they got hungry for anything map-like. They'd ask to see road maps, topos, etc. They were good with a compass to because of that and their love of math. We had fun with some orienteering outings later when they were about 6-12 yrs old.

Hmmm...interesting way to get him out there and involved/occupied. I plan on buying a GPS soon, perhaps that will be the tie in, we can BOTH learn how to use it.

The one problem is that I launch. I should have mentioned that as well. I have a fear of leaving him in a child seat while I launch (that will be when the emergency brake lets go with him in the car) and a fear of leaving him next to a body of water if not in the car.

If that doesn't make you want to get out in the boat, nothing will. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Yeah. I do it to. It's the only gray area in launching. I have twins so we have a routine when I'm alone with them. Now they're 6 so I launch the boat tie it up and tell them to hang out for a minute. They'll play on their DSs or whateever, after they put their PFDs on.

When they were younger in the 230. I'd do the same thing and either have them stand on the dock while I launched go tie the boat, tie it up and we'd put them back in the truck and go park then walk back to the boat. A few extra steps without Mama but we do fine and I can do it with twins you can handle one.

Oh yeah, bring lots of snacks.

Can you have him out next to the boat, while you launch (off to the side within eyesight somewhere?)

Re: both learning GPS at the same time... don't be surprised if he learns much faster than you, after his initial introduction to it! kids at that age are like information sponges! They also have the intrigue (and time) to delve into every nook and cranny of the menus and such.
