A bright future for club sea ray

Not everyone can be an "expert". Some people can not keep their mouth shut when a topic comes up that they really shouldn't be giving advice about. Most people will not be 100% serious all the time, we like to have a little fun and enjoyment when we are on our down time.

Here is the problem that we have on CSR. Some people repeatedly post replies to topics that they have no business giving advice on. Some of the people on here will be bothered by that and start criticizing the person. Things start to go down hill from there and it starts to get personal (and as we've seen, possibly criminal).

Suggestion. Add a technical forum where anyone can post a question or problem, but only a select group of qualified CSR members can respond. This way, people like me could post a question and only get responses from people who know what the hell they are talking about. If they don't think the thread belongs there, give them the ability to move them to other forums. This one forum would then become the CSR "library". Nothing but the good stuff.

Second suggestion. Stop bashing the people that post bad info. When I read a thread and see 4 answers from the "talkers" and 1 answer from one of the Franks, Gary, Dave S, Todd, Bill, etc., I know which one I will take as "the" answer. I can filter the rest on my own. When you start telling people that they are wrong, they push back. Things escalate, people get banned or leave on their own. Reply to the thread, quote the bad information, and start by saying "I disagree with this...". It is a nonconfrontational way of dealing with the bad info and staying on topic.

Lastly, I like the mix that we have here on CSR. We have our share of jokers, regular folks, and serious boaters. All of us fit somewhere in between. I come here to read the excellent technical information that gets exchanged. Thanks to Gary, I know what to do when the head overflows, the info that Dave S posted helped me tremendously during my first 3 months of 260 ownership. At the same time, I like the joke threads and the political threads. For me, CSR is pretty close to being at the marina bar. Lots of serious boating chat, some fooling around, and someone always off to the side spewing BS.

I can understand starting a new site to get the content that you guys desire. I would hope that as Sea Ray owners, you would also visit CSR in addition to that new site. Leaving entirely simply hides the light under the barrel. There are quite a few of us on here that really do want to read what you guys know.

Well put!

Wow. This thread is doing loopty loops. :smt101

Would everyone just slow down, take a deep breath, and think about this for a second.

Since I don't know jack about real boating, I'll just have to stick to the occasional off color comment here and there. :smt021

Well said "skibum"!!:thumbsup: Breaking off into a splinter group essentially creates an elite clique. Just exactly what does that say about this site and the rest of the CSR members that you leave behind? Do you really want to be off on your own away from us peons to flounder around aimlessly? Where's the fun in that? What will we ever do without you?

Nicely said!

Let's also keep in mind that certainly some, if not more, of these "arguments" may never have happened if people were actually talking face to face. I'm not thinking of anything specific here, just generalities. When our only discourse is through the written word, we eliminate the majority of our ability to communicate. We are not able to read another's facial clues or hand gestures. We are not able to listen to the intonation in his/her voice.

This tends to make it hard, at times, to really understand what the person is saying. Because of this, I think it's important to re-read what we write before you hit "submit". Try to read it from a 3rd person's point of view. Try to only write what we would say if we were actually talking to someone face-to-face.

On the flip side, if we are the one reading a post/reply, don't immediately jump down the writer's throat if you take offense. Take it with a grain of salt - maybe what the person wrote is not what they actually intended to say. Granted, some times it is obvious and blatant. But, I truly believe that most of the time it's just a miscommunication.

Some on this board are very good at these skills, others need to work on it (and there's nothing wrong with being one of the people that has to work on it)... I would put myself in the category of "needing to work on it". I try, but I know I am not always successful. But, I'll keep trying to get better and, most importantly, be civil.

Well, I read through what I wrote from a "3rd person's" point of view and went back and changed some things. Hopefully it now comes across as I intended it - simply "for the good of the order".

The "technical forum" is good idea with your heart in the right place. But, it may be hard to implement and follow through with. Plus, it would very likely create a lot of work for those experts. I mean, if I have a question, would I post it to the other common guys, like me? Or would I post it to the experts? None the less, it's a good thought.:smt001

Gentlemen,

If desiring that my family not be threatened anonymously because some coward took exception to a post, and if desiring that a Sea Ray centric website be about operating and maintaining our Sea Ray gas and diesel boats with technically correct, valid posts makes me an elitist, so be it.

Thanks to all the other like minded elitists who have PM'd me. Once I get the new capability rolling I will follow up with you.

Best regards

Wow!

Go to the L48 for awhile and look what happens..........

I hope Gary comes back or is back. I value his advice and others on this site! Besides I want to get his book! Hey if Sarah can do it so can you Gary!!!!

Thanks Jim for doing a great job!

At long last, do I feel a group hug coming on????

No touching!

I can't view YouTube stuff where I'm at, but I certainly know that scene well enough! Great movie!

Gary's departure is a Pyrrhic victory for a very small minority here at CSR.

I contribute to CSR, and contributed to SRO before it, to both gain and share valid technical information on the care and feeding of the 420DA with C series Cummins.

Astute CSR observers may note that much of the quality content, and those who post it, are disappearing from this site.

I remain principally interested in technical excellence regarding the maintenance of my boat. I'll PM a few folks who share this interest and I'll set up a by-invitation only site to focus solely on operation and maintenance of our gas and diesel Sea Rays.

Best regards
Skip

After reading this, my 1st thought was, as a guest of Jim’s maybe you should have just pm’d your friends instead of dumping on something Jim has put a lot of effort into…………

Well the best of luck, hopefully others will persevere and stay.

But for some reason your first part of the above post made me think about, statistics and probability.

It has been my experience that typically those who make proclamations, do nothing. It is the ones who do not make the proclamations are the ones, one has to watch out for, and I am not referring to you Skip, but to the one whoever started this mess.

Contrary to where the finger has pointed I am in no position to say who did or may have done what. I need proof. This does not mean I am doubting Gary, all I have seen are words on an Internet forum, posted by whom? To even that I do not know, other then user names.

Have we completely lost track of what this is about? This all started with a battle between two members of the forum…. Two out of eleven thousand plus! A battle that was taken to levels unknown to us. But, this is not something new. Let’s face it here if you are going to post anything at all on the “World Wide Web” anyone can read it, take offence, and if they really want to, retaliate! I am constantly reminding my 18 year old daughter of this.

This is a new type of media, and if you are going to participate in such you need to realize and understand the person on the other side of the network may be someone on the edge just waiting for a push. It does not matter whether it is CSR, Facebook, Match.com, or even your own personal website. This was a case of Internet Road Rage and sometimes the outcome of that can be very serious. But just as in the case of “road rage” it does take two and either one can stop at anytime. Long before it goes to the next level.

I would sincerely hope that we do not loss any members here because of these events, but if so I am sure the forum will survive and move on. If anything, we all need to take a lesson here, as “Ski” said “just slow down, take a deep breath”. This will all blow over.

...but if so I am sure the forum will survive and move on.

Good post. And yes, the forum will survive and it will move on. Anyone who has been a part of any enthusiast forum knows that these events are a regular occurrence and they are a natural part of the evolution of a forum. These types of events don't spell the demise of the board. These things will happen again when someone else pisses in someone else's corn flakes. In fact, I pissed off everyone from the South with a dumb comment that I made when I was having a bad day personally...it happens and we move on.

One last opinion....I do not think that the quality of information here is getting worse. It's winter and a large percentage of us are done boating until spring and we don't have much to talk about in terms of boating. Go back and read the posts from winters past and you will see the pattern.
