The boat doesn't have a generator and I'm wondering where you guys install one. If you know of any web sites dealing with this please send it along. If we put in an AC unit I believe 8000 BTU would be plenty.

Any one using portable units? Are there any vent type units you know of for boats?

Thank you.

If you are looking to install a genny, and you are not a certified electrician, you may want to consult your local dealers. Its going to cost somewhere in the range of $5-10,000 to add a genny. All depends on weather you get new, used, and size. Plus you are going to need the switchboard to handle it.

Check out my album pics in my profile, in my 268 they stashed the genny in the back corner port side of the engine comparment. I also have pics of my 9,000BTU A/C unit under the aft dinette.

The know how isn't a problem, I'm an industrial electrician.
The what and where, now there's a problem

I just wondered if you guys had this thing down pat... guess not yet.

Thank you for the info

Well that makes two of us to be electricians then. The thing is, adding a genny isn't an everyday occurance around here. There has been one guy on here who has done a decent write up, but it was on a much newer boat than yours.

It's best to go back into the Sea Ray archives and find out how they orignally put one in if it was an avaible option for your vessel.

You may end up having to reconfigure your entire engine compartment to make it work. As I said, you will also have to add a new breaker panel to handle it. You are going to need marine grade wire for everything you do. If your boat burns down and the insurance company finds you put sub-grade crap wire in...you will loose your case.

Do some searches. Blueseas systems makes some nice panels that you can install. CHeck out their website

A good genset to put in your boat, that is known to fit is a 3.0kw Westerbeke, but there are others out there. You also have to drill a through hull in th bottom of your boat for a water pick up. You'll need a water muffler, exhaust hose, water hose, through hull for the exhaust ect.

Good Luck:thumbsup:

If I understand this correctly, you do not presently own a 92 270 Sundancer, you are looking at one to purchase however it does not have air conditioning or a generator.

I’m the person who posted the generator installation video.

I got a deal at $8,500 for the generator with installation. Ballpark, adding air conditioning will run another $4,000 installed.

To be blunt and honest, I would recommend that if you want air conditioning and a generator, please do not buy this 92 270 Sundancer. The $12,500 + you would sink into the boat would only slightly raise the boats value, meaning you would take a big hit, a good $10 grand.

If you want a boat with a generator and air conditioning, buy one that has these things.

I agree, I would never "sink" :smt009 money into an older boat like that. It would be completly upside down.

Upside down is every boat! I never worry about sinking money in my 270.....to replace it with newer model is way outside my budget ($50,000 to $250,000). Friends of ours bought a new 260 and are always watching it's used value compaired to what they still owe the lender. That's where I would be concerned! I would need to buy a 290 to get the same room that my '90 270 has. You'll never make a profit on a used boat so why short yourself the comforts of what's already paid for. A loan is also a bad idea on an older boat. I bought the largest/newest boat I could trailer for the cash I had on hand and we're enjoying every minute on it. I'll maintain it and make it a bit nicer but they do wear out and they are only worth what the market can afford newer or old. If gas skyrockets, not many shoppers will be out there anyways. I'll spend more time on the hook and less traveling but still use the Sundancer, Mike.

Truer words have never been written. I paying cash for the one we are picking up This Thursday too.

I also am expecting gas to go carzy this summer. Funny thing is that's why we bought the 270 in the first place.

We can run the jet boat for cruising and we'll have the (camper) parked in an inlet for the nights.

I don't need to go far with the cruiser towing or running for it to serve it's intended purpose. Gas won't be a big issue for it.

I've never been one to buy a boat in hopes of selling at a profit. The last boat I bought is the one I still own, since
1977. How many people do you know that bought a new boat and kept it for 34 years :smt038 My kids grew up with that boat, the oldest son bought one just like it 2 years ago. Now we have twins.

So no, I won't be selling the Sundancer..... for a looooong time.

I just love the Carlsons as long as the waters are smooooth. A true sexy river boat and we've had ours since 1999. Our 350 merCruiser roller cam is a bit better on gas than the 460 Jet! I get 4.5mpg at 2800rpms or 2mpg at WOT/4bbl 56mph...Mike.
