'90 390EC Broken Side Window

Stopped by the marina this weekend to find the large side window of my 1990, 390EC is broken. Not too sure where to start looking to get a replacement. Any advice or if anyone has been in situation would be greatly appreciated.

Your windshield was made by a company called Taylor Made. They are located in upstate NY. I doubt they will have it, but they might be able to steer you in the right direction.
 
You can probably get a good auto glass shop to cut a replacement from tinted safety glass for a fraction of the cost from Taylor.

Replacement is a little tricky because the side glass on the 390EC is caught between the arch and the windshield corner pillar. The left half on the windshield will likely need to be removed to free the side glass.
 
I agree with Frank. The curved section of the windshield of my 1989 280 Sundancer was broken by a baseball or golf ball (I am across the canal from a baseball field) and the glass had to be custom made as it was no longer available from Sea Ray. We tried calling Taylor Made as well but they no longer had the mold for the glass. As your glass is flat, a good auto window shop should be able to cut the glass for you. I do not know the name of the shop that made the glass for my old boat otherwise I would give it to you. The marina I was using at the time took care of it. All I recall is that the shop was in PA. Oh boy. That sounds like an expensive PIA. Are talking about the entire left side plus the front left side of the windshield? I imagine this will involve removing the headliner in the salon to get to the fasteners?

If it’s just the left side I think I can get to most of that. Luckily the helm chair unbolted and the old plywood on the sides, along with the vinyl was previously removed this summer. Oh boy. I broke mine. It was no big deal. I took the piece out of the other side and gave it to a glass shop for a template. 200 bucks, perfect match. I didn't have to disassemble the frame at all. I just popped the glass out.

Take the rubber gasket off, Take a razor to slice the glazing tape on the inside, start at a corner and start pulling it apart. It won't want to come out.

Could you remove the Arch or flip it over? I'm just asking because I have the same setup. Just curious???
 
Taking the arches loose on these boats is a big job that will require a crane.forklift or travel lift plus reasealing when it is re-installed. Taking the port corner and port front panel of the windshield loose would be the far easier approach....if it needs to come loose. The angle of the arch on the 390 will probably allow you to lift the side panel up and clear to remove it, if the glass guy can't work with the gaskets to replace the glass panel in- place. Compare the angle of the back edge of the windshield with the angle on the forward edge of the arch....if t he slope back is greater on front edge than the arch's slope back, then you probably aren'y going to lift t he side glass up and out without taking the winsdshield loose.

Findling a glass guy who can come to t he boat and replace t he glass in-place is the answer, but remember that these windshield gaskets are 25-ish years old so they are going to be sun-baked, dry and brittle. I suspect fitting a new window glass into the frame in-place is going to be a job.
 
Any decent glass shop can make a new piece using a template. You can make a cardboard or paper template of the missing piece using the frame, in place. Be careful not to make the template too big or too small. there should be a small gap all the way around. When they make the piece, it is tempered by heating it to where it nearly liquifies. When this is done, the piece grows a little bit so it's tough to get a very precise size as the amount of "growth" is a little unpredictable. Once tempered, it can't be ground or cut to size like normal glass or it will shatter like it exploded. I learned all of this going through the process with mine as the owner of the glass company is a friend.
