Hi all, have a question
I have a 1985 Sea Ray 360 with an 8K Westerbeke Generator, the last time I took it out it was running while underway and when anchored I turned on the air conditioner, shortly after that it died and was unable to start it back up. It turns over good, has gas getting to the carb, coil has correct voltage but not getting any spark. Anyone have any ideas?

thanks

Kelley

First, check the oil in both the governor and the engine.
Second, was she pumping a good flow of water, check the cooling system.
Thrid, check the engine circuit breaker (mine has a fuse)

Have you tried bypassing the shut down circut? There is also a Bosch relay in the circut before the coil - those can corrode and go bad too - both of these would cause a loss of spark

thank you much, will try these and get back with you and let you know how it went :smt001

I have had several Westerbeke's and logged 1000's of hours on them. The last major issue I had was similar. After replacing everything you could possibly replace it turned out to be the curved exhaust neck. There is a screen inside that can not be seen. It can carbon up and block the exhaust flow. There are safety shutoff sensors that will not allow the gen to start if there is a situation that could harm the motor. The replacement exhaust elbow is about $900 but it can be cleaned. Good luck. I hope it is something simple like a big On/Off switch on off.

I have a 8kw westerbeke. It stopped working this spring. I thought it was the fuel shut off solenoid. So I replaced it. Still no luck. Turns out that there is a starter solenoid before the fuel shut off. It got wet at some point, and was heavily corroded. $20 part. Put in a new one and voila, it works better than last year.

there is an oil pressure sender on the engine that you bypass with a toggle switch on startup they are cheap but do go bad quite often resulting in engine no run

I wanted to tell you all thanks for the replies to my thread and let you know that after checking many things to try and figure out what this over heating issue was it ended up being an old impeller that had fell apart and lodged in the heat exchanger. we checked the one that is installed and was fine, never thought that someone would not remove the old fragments when they replaced it. Genny runs good

thanks to all,

Kelley

my Gen was running good until I pulled the boat for a prop repair. put back in water gen ran but for a few min only then shut down now will not start. replaced the impellor and a relay switch now have ground wire that is hot. now when I try to start Gen it will turn over for a little bit then the braker pops on Gen. The batter charge shows something is pulling around 30 amps seems to be a short somewhere but why? Any thoughts? 1999 38 Sundance. Westerbeke gen.

Just had my Westerbeke fixed for what might be similar issue. I had power to the control at the gen set but nothing on the boat side. Finally traced it the short to the water temperature safety switch. It failed internally and shorting to the generator engine block. I cross wired it over the terminals of the switch until I got a switch and it worked great. I don't understand all that's going on but that's what fixed the system on my '97 400DA. Just to play it safe I swapped out/ up dated all the oil and water sensors and switches.

By the way; not all parts schematics in the Westerbeke parts manual at correct. Handy to know if you are ordering your own goodies. They might have more than one part for what ever application. Unless you have an up to date; including notes and a listing of alternates, then make sure you chat with someone that dose.
