I have an 89 268 in very good condition. Had the boat in the water from 99 to 2002 in Vancouver BC, and then had to lay "Mumble" up for a few years whilst I battled some health issues - benign spinal tumor and malignant melanoma,

Now all is well but have to make a choice -

Repower with original - Twin 4.3V6 and alpha drives

or

Repower with single big block and Bravo/Alpha

I know the latter option is big job, rebuilding transom etc but might be a more economical long term option.

Any and all input is welcome

Thanks

I got a 268 with T4.3 A1's...Thats great power for that boat, and that is what i would keep in it. Glad to hear your better.

I prefer the big block as it gives a bit better economy, and is much easier and less costly to service and maintain. However, the 4.3's perform admirably in that boat, and give get home power in the event of a failure. It would be a lot of work to convert to a single. I would stay with the twins all things considered.

Thanks for the replies

I am going to keep the 4.3s, easy option!

Will be replacing outdrives and will probably go with a counter rotating drive for port engine. With the twins the torque steer was huge and required use of the trim tabs to level things out.

As the engines are out, I am going to replace all the hard to get at bits at this time! With everything in place you have to be an ambidexterous midget to get at some items!

Hope to have everything back together by May.

Counter rotating props should negate vitually all of the torque problem. I would also recommend an external tie bar to reduce the strain on the gimbals. Good luck. the 268 is a fine vessel.
