I will chime in as well, with no recomendation. I have asked this question to three of my close friends that happen to be Merc. certified mechanics, and have gotten conflicting information. I have a 1988 300 sundancer with a pair of fresh water cooled (closed cooling system ) 260 mercs. It came with 143 stats. The gauges read 125 at idle down the river and 144 at 4600 RPMs at 41 MPH. Runs real good, Im staying right here. PS I run in salt water on the East coast. Thats my 2 cents.
