Several of us have this boat yet the available owners manual (including the one in my original owners packet) does not explain how this sofa to berth conversion happens. The photo in the manual seems to show the back rest and the seat cushions being used to form a sleeping area. That being said, the back cushions of the sofa on the later models are not removable. How does this go together?

I realize this may take some research through archives at the Sykes Creek or Merrit Island plants where these boats were built. Perhaps you have some inside contacts that might be able to solve this mystery.

Thanks in advance.

Well, Ill have to do some digging but off the top of my head and my knowledge of the boats we build here in k-town the sofa is on a 'slider' with a locking mechanism at the base and the floor in the middle. Some have a lift-up back rest (takes some force to pull up) and a nylon/vinyl pull cord for the bottom to slide out. Some have a little plastic "pull" on the sides of the sofa as would a lazyboy recliner would. But Ill have to get back to you on this kk?

I have a 1990 EC, I have not used the pull out bed, however, the cushion pulls out and there are 2 screw-in legs you install on the bottom, then insert the two additional cushions behind the pullout. That makes up the bed. Hope that makes sense.

What " two additional cushions"? I have only the cushions that you sit on...the cushions that make up the back rest of the sofa don't move.. see photo in my original post. There is nothing that pulls out on mine.

I have the custom cut plywood, a bag full of legs but no additional cushions. In looking at photos of older models, I can visualize placing the back cushions on the flat surface of the extension but on mine and others I have seen there are 2: back rest cushions:1 is curved and the other is flat...they don't move. They are attached to the bulkhead beneath the cabinets on the port side.

Beneath my sofa are 2; compartments with hinged lids. The aft compartment houses the aft A/C unit and the forward compartment is where the bag of legs is stored.

The plywood piece(s) that would make the extension are beneath the master berth matress.

Some how I feel like I am getting close to solving this mystery.

Am I missing something?

I don't know if this will apply or not to yours, but sounds somewhat similar to our 370. We have a piece that slides out from underneath the sofa and rests on the table (it converts from a dining table to a coffee table type setup). We do have 2 extra cushions that fill in this area. They stay secure with snaps underneath the sofa cushions.

Mystery Solved. I spoke to my PO today and he explained it to me this way: The original owner lost the original configuration pieces (WTF ). Anyway, the PO had a custom board made and two custom upholstered foam pieces to add to the sofa bases to create a large bed. All of this stuff is stored beneath the master berth matress along with a bag of legs that screw into the custom made plywood piece.

I haven't put this "Rube Goldberg" deal together yet but when I do I'll post pics.

Mine is not like any one elses...go figure.

My '89 390 EC Salon Berth Pics

Ok ...as promised, here are pics of my custom salon berth bed modification as demonstrated by my Sheltie puppy "Black Jack".

1. Find plywood under master berth matress and attach legs.
2. Place assembled platform against and slightly over hanging the original sofa base.
3. Place custom cushions on platform.
4. Add sheets and pillows and you're good to go.
