I am helping a friend choose his first boat. We are going to look at two boats Wed. An '88 268 with a 454 jasper engine and a '92 270 DA with a merc 7.4. Any input on these would be appreciated.... does anyone have experience with Jasper engines ?

mmmm....how about a bump.

I owned an '89 268 with a merc 454....Great boat and had a lot of fun with it.....I did some overnighting on my '83 225SXL but the 268 is what really introduced me into crusing for weekends......I have no experience with the Jasper's as the boat was never re-powered.....

A neighborhood friend has the same boat. He bought the boat in 1999 with a merc 454 and repowered, in 2001, with a 7.4MPI merc Horizon crate motor. He bought the whole package..engine, gimball and O/D (Bravo 2...I think). He had some issues with exhaust routing and ended up putting in a complete custom through hull exhaust (instead of thru hub). Came out really nice, with chrome side exhaust and the boats "sounds" really kool when he goes by.....

Dominic , thanks for info. We went and looked at two '88 268's & a '92 270da yesterday. My friend soon realized this is too much boat for him to start with. He is now looking at a couple of 250 dancers '95 - '96 range.

I own a 1989 268 with a 7.4 bravo1 that now has 750 hours on her and its still very strong with good compression. This is a great handling boat and I don't think its to big for a first timer. It has just the right amount of room for my needs. I also trailer it with ease. I would not rule out the 268 yet if the price is right.

I agree, a 250 isn't much different in size....a 268, however, has a lot of nice features, and really is a great entry way into some good weekend overnights. And with the forward facing arch, most have gone to custom canvas which gives a ton of extra headroom...

yeah I really liked the 268....great layout with the dedicated dinette.Love that forward Arch ! The boat is listed at 28' 3" LOA . The one we looked at had a new outdrive & recently rebuilt 7.4 engine. It looked pretty good just needed some cleaning and some new canvas. Here's a link.

That's a nice looking boat. I had an 87 268 with a 454 and alpha drive. I don't think this is too much boat vs a 250. Only advice i have is to stay away from the big block alpha combo. The 268 was my first cruiser. Your friend will gwt used to the size quickly. They shrink when you put them in the water

One thing to pay close attention to is the arch where it is mounted. If it wasn't kept caulked around the mounts, water will get in and rot the wood brace that keeps the arch stable. I had to replace the wood on the starboard side arch support which is fairly easy but the side panel has to come off. Shake the arch side to side and see if it flexes alot, if it doesn't, you are safe. Also pay close attention to the long windows in the cabin, they tend to leak after 15 years or so.

The extra couple feet really doesn't make alot of difference towing or piloting, but is a blessing if you are caught in a storm and are in 4-5 foot waves. The boat has a great feel and is a dream to handle in almost any weather.
