I have what I assume is a leak in my steering lines/fittings. When I turn my steering wheel in the cabin, it will stop after a couple turns. When I turn the wheel on the flybridge, it continues to turn without stopping. It also has very delayed response in turning. Boat is a '86 Sea Ray Sedan Bridge 300.

Does anyone know the fluid capacity for these Sea Star Systems?

Is there a bleeding screw I need to open/close when bleeding like you would on a brake caliper?

Where would you search for the leak?

Should I start by just refilling and watching for the leak or should I try replacing seals first?

Thanks for any help!

On my 30 Sedan Bridge the lower helm steering housing was cracked on the back side.
Slowly leaked hydraulic fluid into the area behind it.
Consequently the upper helm station steering would just spin. Had to continuously fill it.
Tried to seal the crack with epoxy etc but hydraulic pressure too high for it to work.

@BEH, For your lower helm, how did you figure out it was cracked? did you have to remove it or was there an access panel to see where it was cracked?

When I lost steering in upper helm I checked the hydraulic fluid and found it empty.
Lower helm was full.
I could see the hydraulic lines in the upper station and no signs of fluid.
I had to remove the lower helm housing and saw the crack with the fluid leaking.
Also found fluid on floor under it which was behind the paneling.
Used haz mats to absorb it.
Very slow leak and at that time couldn’t find same housing to replace it with or companies to repair it.
I now see companies advertising that they can repair or replace hydraulic steering components.
