I just recently picked this boat and trailor up for a cool $600.00 knowing full well what the issues with it are, first order of business i have water in the oil of the 140hp Mercruiser was told the manifold gasket was bad, my question there is is that the only thing that could be wrong or should i look further more into that issue, secondly it has a bad alternator which to me is an easy fix and third it has a prop on it that looks like JAWS got ahold of it which is another easy fix, my biggest concern is the water in the oil, what should i do first, like change oil, compression test, then seek out a leaky manifold gasket/manifold. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Shawn

Welcome to the board Shawn. Looks like you got yourself a nice project boat. The prop should be fairly easy and inexpensive replacement. Most aluminum props can be gotten for 70-150 dollars.

The alternator need to be a marine alternator only. It has been marinized so don't run to your local part's store.

Since oil and water don't mix I would suggest a compression check.

Best of luck and let us see some pictures as you fix it up.

Thanks for the reply, i'll definitly post pics of the progress, i cant wait to get started on this project, main concern is were is the water coming from :smt017

Well ive found the reason there is water in the oil, i removed the manifold and it all looked good until i removed some rust just below the manifold mounting surface were i found a crack in the block, which is quite disappointing, but when i picked the boat up i knew in the back of my mind there might be something more wrong with it then just a bad gasket. My question now is were can i find a used engine or long block to stick back in here, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Shawn

Shawn,
Any luck finding a motor? 140hp, I believe that is a 4 cylinder correct? A lot of the Mercruiser motors are Chevy blocks. If it were mine I would attempt to identify what engine it is then start checking with some "automotive" engine suppliers.

You may also want to get your block inspected as depending on the crack location, some can be fixed.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Depending on what caused the crack (not winterized?) you may need to have the outdrive checked for cracks/damage also.

Good luck, and for the price you paid for the boat I think you will do alright when you get it all done, even if you have to stick a decent amount into it.

Hey thanks for the reply, no luck yet finding a motor, not any that i would stick directly in the boat anyways, ive heard of a couple forklift companies using this same motor in there lifts, we have a Jasper Engine supply house here near by but have yet to get in touch with them and further south of me we have a USENGINE supply house that rebuilds engines and said they can fix the big ol crack in the block which to me would be amazing if they could because the crack appears to me to go all the way through to an oil journal allowing water into the oil so unless the can weld up the crack from the inside i just dont see that being a viable option. I see these engines all over EBAY but shipping them is what hits you hard in the pocket book so im gonna try a lil harder here locally to find one in descent shape, because like you said for what i paid for the boat i should do alright even if i have to drop a descent amount into getting a motor.

Thanks
Shawn
