I am looking at a 1985 Searay 270 with twin I/Os w/alpha 1 drives Factory A/C w/reverse heat with a trailer Newer model.About 900 hrs on engines.Recent outdrive work and engines tuned.New canvas both camper and cockpit.
My question is what should I look for in this older Ray, Both good and bad and what price would be good to pay.
thanks Capt JJ
Hello every body glad i found this site looking foward to hearing from ya all

Welcome, fellow Lake Michigan boater! I have an 86' 30' and absolutely love it! I will suggest to you the same as many will here, have her surveyed. Especially with the older boats its good to know she is dry and the engines are good! You get that figured out and everything else is manageable. The fun is updating and little personalization things! Welcome to the board and good luck with your purchase!!

I think its a great boat! I have one that has served my wife and I well for the last 7 years. I just bought a 02 300 Sundancer so the 270 is for sale. Got a deal I couldn't pass up! So now I am two boat owner and thats not work for long. It is an 88 270 Sundancer with two new engs, less than 60hrs. 3kw Onan genset to run the new ac/heat unit I installed last year. Vacu-flush head(must have). Custom canvas/camper enclosure with sun screen for front half.(won't even tell you what that cost) Inside is blue and is clean. Also has fiberglass fishing outriggers and two rod holders. This boat came from Lake Lanier 7 years ago and has been covered rack stored and the engs and genset freshwater flushed after every use by me.(yes, I'm particular about stuff they never do it good enough) Now for the best part, 2002 almuinum triple axle trailer with new HD tires installed before the Keys trip last June. Delivery may be an option.

Thank you very much for the quick feed back, sure glad i joined the club. Kevin May I ask what you are expecting to get for your 88 270.Thanks again both of you. I got the searay bug and the 30' rays sure are interesting.Missed a 1988 30' in Indiana for 16K loaded.
Keep a dry bildge and always out you nose in to the wind Captjj

My price is much lower. Send me your phone number in a PM and i'll call you.

First off everyone is correct in getting a survey, however there are a couple of things to look for on the Sundancer. One is the transom, let's face it there are 2 giant holes there with potential for water intrusion. Second is stringers because they are fiberglas coated wood with weep holes which may allow water intrusion. Look around, Boattrader and Yachtworld are places to start but there is A LOT of junk out there and exceptional ones are a little hard to come by. Where is the one you have been looking at, I may have seen it as I am also currently looking for the same thing.

Oh yeah, and GET A SURVEY!!! Hard to tell what people are covering up, and you don't want to put you or your family at risk or pay more than what you paid for the boat in repairs.

Thank you for the come back. The boat I was looking at is in Illinois Fox Lake. Please be my guest to pursue this boat. You will find it on Graigs List(Chicago) I decided to keep looking for a good deal on a 30' sundancer. I felt going up 3' from my 24'Wellcraft Aruba 1988 was not enough to justify the money that the gentleman was asking. It really looked like a great boat. Thanks again to all who responded to my post.Always keep a dry bildge and keep your nose into the wind.
Thanks again Capt JJ (want to be Searay owner)

There's a '85 300 in VA for $8,000 that looks somewhat decent, it's on Yachtworld. I'm glad you said Chcago, I'm going to look at one in Milwaukee next weekend and I'd hate to have to compete with a friend from CSR:smt038
