im kinda new in the boating so please excuse the newbie question. i just replaced the starter solenoid thinking it was the problem for the motor to not turn over. it is a big block V8. The solenoid just clicks and the motor will not crank over. My question is does this sound like it needs a new starter or should i be checking something else?
I just purchased this boat this boat and the previous owner said it ran before he let it sit in the driveway for 2 years. He said he also winterized it before it sat

First thing I would do is pull the plugs and lubricate the cylinders through the spark plug holes. It would be best to prime it by turning the oil pump. Then try to turn the engine over by hand. Two years is a long time to sit with no lubrication. If it turns over then try using the starter to turn it over before installing the plugs. Note that some ignition systems shouldn't be run without the plug wires being grounded, you may have to disconnect the ignition system. Are you sure the battery is good?

Yep pull the plugs and see if it will spin.
It could be the flappers are gone and the cylinders are full of water and it's hydro locked.

Thank you for the advice. i did pull all the plugs and they looked brand new. i also sprayed fogging oil in each cylinder. The previous owner said he winterized it before it sat. New update is i pulled the starter motor and benched tested it and it will not turn over so i am on my way to pick up a new one. Can you be a bit more specific on the oil pump and maybe how to do that. i would really like to get some oil moving before i even crank this motor over. To me that makes alot of sense on what you said.
thank you for all your help....

Make sure you get a marine starter, they're designed to keep you from blowing up. Without knowing which engine you have I can't give specific directions but basically you want to spin the oil pump without turning the engine over. On V-8 Ford engines you pull the distributor and insert a shaft that fits the oil pump shaft and spin it with a drill. If this is too much you'll probably be alright if you leave the plugs out and spin the engine over until the oil pressure gauge shows a reading. Note that most gauges don't register while cranking the engine but if you release the key from the start position and let it stop in the run position you'll probably get some kind of reading. Good luck!

To follow up i have found what engine is in the boat. it is a GM V8 305 5.0L.
does anyone know a good website to get parts online. I am looking for a new or rebuilt starter. I have the serial number for the engine as well. i cant seem to find the exact specs for this motor. if anyone can point me in the right direction to find parts for this boat would be greatly appreciated. i bought the seloc book for the boat but there is no part numbers or exact specs for this motor. i thought i found a starter for it online but then it is asking me for the teeth on flywheel 14? 14.5?
Thanks guys for all your input.

Go to Arco.com. They are an aftermarket suppier of marine electrical parts. Technical support is good as well. Make sure you get a gear reduction starter. Half the size and weight of a full size GM starter. New mounting bolts are a good idea as well.

Thanks for all your good advice. To update i did get a used starter and before i put it in i tried to move the flywheel to get things going a bit. it did move so i then decided with the starter out that i would drain the oil. Well to my surprise it was filled with water and alot of it. what puzzles me is there was alot of water and very little oil if any. My question is , is the motor totally blown or is there something i am missing? spookeay said something about flappers on this thread. to me it looked like fresh water to. the water was pretty clean. Any advice on what i should be doing next would be greatly appreciated. i still did not try to crank it over yet with the starter, i am awaiting response from you guys out there since you ovious know alot more than i do.
thanks again

put a socket on the bolt in the crank ,the bottom pulley and see if you can turn it with a ratchet if not it is most likely locked up with rust in the cylinders. pull all the spark plugs out and blow in the spark plug holes with air if you have a compressor, and put marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and let it soak for a week and try it again. if it still wont go its time for a new motor and what ever caused this ,manifolds or risers or both

I have the serial number for the engine as well. i cant seem to find the exact specs for this motor.

MerCruiser Service Manual Number 3 has all the specifications you need.
