This is Mathew "helping" get the engine out. Previous owners thought it was a good idea to use a car engine. Duh

Got it up and out

love stuff like that...good luck with it !

Love the caption on that last pic...

Good thing you got that boat out of NJ. If they saw that, I think they'd try to slap that methane tax on your engine..:smt043

Good luck,
Michael

I'll tell ya this weather is not helping, but trouble is, spring is only 4 months away. Not much time. So just gonna have to deal with it.:smt089

Good for you for teaching your kids this stuff. I was always stuck working on some kind of project w/my dad as a kid (project boat, car, project house, etc) and I hated it. Now though I appreciate what he taught me.

My guys love this stuff. I'm the cooler version of my Dad though

Your engine lift photos brought back a good memory. My dad bought a fishing party boat and was converting it to an oyster/crab boat. First thing was a new engine so he cut the covered top off.

I was probably about 10 or 11 at the time. We disconnected the old engine, hooked up the lift (but did not start lifting), which of course was on shore and the boat was in the water...see where this is going?

He needed something quick, a tool, a part, something that required us to drive to the store. We left, got back about an hour or two later (probably longer given how much the tide had dropped), tide had dropped over a foot and the engine was out! The engine was hanging in the air. The boat went down, engine was hooked to the lift on shore, engine went up. Good thing it was completely detached from the boat before we left!

Looks like you have an OMC outdrive? What size engine are you going to re-power with? I'll be doing a repower project on the same boat soon, and would like to put a 5.7 in it if the stringers allow.

Good luck with the project, hopefully I'll have some shots to post in the next coming months also.

Scott

I drive truck for a living. I'm buying as soon as I can a rebuilt 307 with 265hp output and a rebuilt OMC Electric shift. This is what my boat came with factory. Just when I go her she had a missing outdrive and a busted Chevy smallbocck from a car!..I just need to get past where the new one is when he's there to get them. It'll run on the stand he claims. Once I get them home it should be a sinch to get it back in running order. Then I just need to get to the nickel dime stuff on the rest of the boat. If your boat has a 5.0 then a a 5.7 would bolt right up. Blocks are identical, just bigger bore and stroke.

"Chevy smallbocck from a car!.."

Can you elaberate on this...

The dumb dumb tried to run a car engine in the boat. There is an EGR valve in the intake! This did not last long!

This is why I got a deal on her and need a whole combo package.

man that looks coooooooollllllddddddd

I avoid anything that has to be done outside in the winter. The daily driver and the boat don't fit in the garage. Major work waits till spring lol.

So I take it you are not using anything of the old motor then....

Are you sure that the exhaust bolts are the same on a 307 vurses a 305/350, I can't recall if they are the same and if not, you will not be able to bolt up the OMC manifold. The other thing is there are not allot of marine parts available for the 307. I know some stuf maybe interchangable with a 305/350 but not everything.

As far as I know from hot roding cars, all small block Chevys are identical as far as bolting think to them. Now the engine I'm getting is a complete unit. It will run on the stand. Its still attacked to the stern drive. Both engine and drive have only 100 hours on the rebuild. All of what you see in my pics will be on the "Parts Pile" all but the engine mounts.
As far as the cold, if I wait till spring, I'll have the job done by fall.

OK. I have now secured the engine and outdrive. I found one that has about 200 hrs on a rebuild on both the engine and drive. This is the original equipment for my boat, however there are some mods I need to make. Bear with me, I'm not sure what they call it but I need to convert the steering system. My boat has the twin cable "gear drive" steering system. This drive is set up for the Outboard style push pull system that puts another hole thru the hull on the starboard side. This is pictured on the 1972 SEA RAY brochure. I can see in the housing that the hole for the steering shaft is closed with a rubber stopper that can be removed. I have some Junk drives to scab steering parts from. Its the intermediate housing that I have no steering parts for. Anybody got one? PM me if you do.
Now I have left a deposit on this equipment due to the fact that I had no room on my trailer to haul it home this trip. But here are some pics on the stand. We got her running and appears to run strong. I'm suprised she ran so well. I thought she'd shake off the stand, but she was smooth.

Looks good. Did you get a good deal on the package?

Doug

Edit: I took a look again and the engine looks really clean.... slight seepage on the intake manifold gasket but that's typical. Good score.

To me I got a deal on the above motor. With the help of a few and especially the help and tech advice from SCORPIO. Hey man thanks. I have secured this.

This is an intermediate housing with Power Steering. The best part is that I need a new tru coarse cable. Nobody makes one anymore. This power steering settup works using a rack and pinion Tele-Flex cable. Now I can change out the helm and the whole cable with new equipment. I'm waiting to get a price on the shipping for this piece. Once home I will couple this with that engine and drive in OH. Can't wait to get my hands on this stuff and get it into the boat. Then I can start on rebuilding the engine covers and freshining up the interior.

Just picked up the engine and drive in OH. I'm actully still there now. Just figured I'd share. I'm pretty psyched now:)
