Has anyone had to remove their generator from a 400/410 sundancer with Cats? I need to get the generator ready for removal. The cat mechanic is going to remove components off the starboard side of the engine. Together, we are going to pull it with the help of a crane. My question is. Has anyone here done it and what am I In for? How much of the engine did you dismantle? Did you pull the generator out end first, top first ect. Thanks!

I can't offer any assistance, but I would love to see pictures and hear about how it goes. I love my Westerbeke but it seems like every spring it's such an ordeal to get it running consistently. Once it's running it's a thing of beauty, but I have to cross my fingers every time I fire it up.

When I bought my boat someone had previously sawed a hole in the floor big enough to lift the generator out. I was guessing that meant it was hard to get out otherwise.

Good luck. Post pics.

Y'all do know the cockpit decks come out of these boats don't you?
Yes they certainly do. Mine was replaced as part of the purchase. Here is how it was done:
remove starboard and aft seating
remove small starboard engine room hatch
remove hatch support beam
disconnect main engine room hatch lift and fully open hatch and support
remove starboard engine exhaust
disconnect and stow out of the way the starboard throttle cable
disconnect and stow engine sync cables if you have one
remove starboard engine exhaust pipe support
remove starboard engine crankcase recirc system
remove starboard engine raw water transfer pipe
remove generator racor and deck support brace

At this point the generator can be disconnected and worked out. You may have to remove the generator heat exchanger...

And, by the way, if you are in that deep you should consider replacing the water heater; they have limited life. And consider cleaning and painting back in that entire area....

Why do you need to pull it ?

Generator has zero voltage output. Westerbeke mechanic said it's toast. We are going to pull it and he is going to let me do all the work at his shop. This will save me money so that I can be more thorough with the engine and have the funds to replace less questionable parts. Good advice on the water heater. I'll take it. Thank you!
