Hey guys have got the 2003 6.2L merc. Its got 235 hours and seems to running rich. Its got efi. When should plugs and such be replaced. I notice the exhaust a little while idling. Any suggestions helpful.

Have you tried some fuel injector / intake cleaner? If it's running rich it may be your throttle body is getting gummed up.

It would be a good idea to pull a couple of plugs on both sides and see what they look like. If you could post a picture that would really be helpful. If that is too much trouble, take a look at the following link and tell me what they look like.

It could be a number of different things but the plugs usually can tell you what is going on inside the engine.

If it were me, before I would spend any money on the engine, I would have a tech connect the ECM to his scanner to see if there may be something that's out of spec. With MPI engines, quite often if they are not running right it's not the typical things that are causing it like plugs or injectors. When I sold my 240SD it was 4 years old and had over 300 hours on it. I never tuned it up and it ran (and idled) just fine when I sold it.

I just managed to pick up the Mercruiser service manual for the 5.0L/5.7L/6.2L engines on eBay (for $20!) and the recommended interval for plugs and wires is every three years. I'm past that myself and both mains are running great. I'll probably do the plugs and wires this fall.
