58 Sedan Bridge Official Thread

It pains me to look across at Legacy Harbor from our condo at North Star Yacht Club. I'm so sorry for your loss.

But you will love the 58. Hope we can meet you some day. I don't think Reward will be back in Ft. Myers for a least 3 years. Our slip at Tarpon Point was completely wiped out. We are glad Reward was in her Hurricane Hole at the Chattanooga Yacht Club!

Thank you for the note! Glad you were safe and sound up in Chattanooga! We almost bought a 58 that was/is for sale there (blue hull) but glad that deal didnt work out since the one we are closing on popped on the market after we walked away from the Chattanooga boat when the dealer was playing games (in my opinion). We always like to say things work out for a reason. :D Good luck in your future endeavors and hope to meet some day as well!

Yes there is access across the hard top to above the helm, and along the wall to the cabinet by the ice maker.

We had a 44 Sundancer previously. For us the biggest running difference is conditions we would run relatively uncomfortable at 14kts in the the 44 we now run at 17kts relatively comfortably.

Make sure you know the MAN maintenance history of any boat you look at, if the A1 service (which brokers incorrectly call 1000 hour) hasn't been completed recently (within 3 years in FL saltwater) then read back through this thread on what is involved and what can happen if it's not done. One boat we looked at had the service done after not touching it for 6+ years and ended up spending 60k to replace heat exchangers and various other bits.

Thank you for the note as well. I smiled when you mentioned the above as I have been reading these threads for the past 3 months as we explored buying the 580 and had noted the “1000” hour service threads. I got a kick when we moved into the “shopping to purchase” position when brokers would say “1000 hour service has been done”; needless to say, because of that threads i had read i very politely informed them that statement was not accurate and I would shift the conversation to finding out when was the last a1 service done. I have been very appreciative of this forum and all the information i have gleaned from it to assist in our decision making process. I believe i have about 10 pages worth of threads to finish and then ill have flipped through every page. I have also booked marked relevant pages that i may need to reference in the future once we have the boat. Thank you to all who contribute!

Forgive me if I should “know” this already, but Does anyone know if the NMEA network is the NMEA2000 or the older version? Just doing some research on swapping out an old e120 and Garmin XSV display with new Raymarine axios displays. Thoughts anyone? Normally id just give my mechanic a call but he’s swamped dealing with Hurricane Ian after losing his home and shop and I don’t want to pester him quite yet. Thanks!

Where? The only mention I find in the Parts Manual is in the galley section, but the actual location is in the "not shown" category.

I'd like to mount all of our portables in useful locations, but at the same time I'd like for them not to be in the way... and ideally, not unsightly to the extent possible...

If original and Raymarine then probably Seatalk1, Seatalk HS (Ethernet), and NMEA 0183

I knew the blue hulled boat! Sorry to hear Erwin was playing games. That particular salesman is an idiot.

As @ttmott mentioned probably all seatalk1, not seatalkNG. The boat was likely delivered with an e120 and old Sea Ray navigator. It's possible they put in a seatalk1 to NG converter to connect the Garmin.

I assume I have all factory locations.

Forward cabin, starboard side hanging locker.

Forward side of Master bed cabinet

Under Galley sink.

At helm on bridge

I knew the blue hulled boat! Sorry to hear Erwin was playing games. That particular salesman is an idiot.

It was a beautiful boat and we were excited had the salesman actually been willing to write our offer! The funny thing is the way that salesman handled it was almost insulting where i didnt even call back. He finally called me back after like 4 days and no response from me and said "hey, good news we were able to come down in price" and i said " sorry, after you wouldn't take my offer to your client i actually found out about a 580 that wasn't on the market yet and we have that under contract". What made me mad was my broker was even willing to step away from the deal (my broker had our 44 sold) so i could negotiate a better price since he knew i was working within certain budgets and they were a tad outside of it. I said to the salesman "so let me understand this, if i bring my broker to the table you will have to pay him 5% of the 10% comp, but if i dont bring him to the table you're still going to charge 9.5% comp?" He simply replied and said "this isn't SWFL and we almost always get full asking up here". By that point i was fairly annoyed and insulted so i said Thanks Michael and good luck with your sale.

Regardless, it all worked out in the end and im happy with the 580 we are ending up in. We are big believers everything happens for a reason. I did see the Chattanooga 580 said sale pending last week but doesn't appear so this week? Happy Monday everyone!

@swaterhouse Thanks, Scott, that helps. Where/how is the one under the galley sink fastened? I'd have thought it'd make it more difficult to use that space for pots/pans/etc.?

On the back wall of the cabinet forward (left) side. There is a 110v plug in the upper corner, it's just below that. I thought I had a picture but I don't see it.

The only thing we have in front of it is the trash can.

Got it!

I didn't check the bridge, but looked in all the other places... and didn't find any evidence fire extinguishers had ever been mounted in any of those. No "empty" screw holes, etc...

Are the typical attachment straps actually screwed to the bulkheads?

Alright I busted into the indirect lighting project on the salon side panels. You need 3/8” rope light 120v & 4’ long. If you get the same plastic connector you won’t even need to fish the wire down to the plug behind the sofa back. View attachment 108885View attachment 108884
So I also looked into this project today and was able to get this part off so I can get my lights ordered. I have seen your posts about plugs under the couch backs. Are there plugs behind these backs on port and starboard? I wasn’t able to get the next piece off and didn’t want to continue until I checked in with the pros here first. Any tips on those plugs would be great!

Just remove the fwd salon couch backs and you will see the plugs which are switched. They look like regular two plug outlets.

My next years project!

For you guys discussing the door latch...I didn't go back into all of the threads, but I'll mention to look at the latch and see if it's pointed, or flattened off. Ours broke and then had the symptoms described (jumping the catch). I have Al bars to put in the tracks so we have security while aboard, and to at least make a thief have to think and find the bar to open from the outside (and stop the door from opening while underway) If you haven't looked into it, the latch/lock assembpy is $4500 from Taylor made last I called. Maybe the salvage business will save some. Anyway, I think I will try Carters dremel the "neck" a little as I've adjusted everything with little success.

i had a problem and called Taylor Made -- after hearing the crazy prices - i did some checking - the lock set can be purchased at a good locksmith shop for about $150 - you can easily take the lock set out of the door and take it with you - it is a well known lock set

We are finally closing on our 2007 580 either this Friday or Monday depending on how quickly the abstract comes back. Does anyone know where i could order the 2008 580 captains chairs or should i assume those are no longer manufactured and just shop for new captains chairs somewhere? The ones on the 580 we are buying are in perfect condition but same as our 44 sedan bridge and i really liked the 2008s and up captains chairs. Thoughts? Thanks!

Forget the Sea Ray helm chairs. Around 2010 SR went to Stidd for the big boat helm seats.
Get down to FLIBS and buy a new set of Stidd helm chairs. Stidd will significantly discount their seats at the show. Plus they threw in the mounting adapter plates with the package. That is what I did. Undoubtably one of the best upgrades on the boat. These are the Stidd Low Back Admiral seats.

Tom,
Love your chairs! Is that an autopilot remote I see on the right arm extension of the captain's chair?
