I have an issue with my starboard 6V92TA with a cold start. I purchased the boat in Sept 09 and as the weather got colder, it began to have more trouble starting than the port. I replaced all batteries thinking the cold weather was weakening them, but it did not seem to help. I almost could not get it started late in the season prior to layup, and when I commissioned them in the spring, it was the same thing....port started and stb took a long time. The engines do not have block heaters. The port has no issue except normal slow start which take a few tries to get started, smokes for about 10-15 seconds then clears. The starboard takes much longer to get started and smokes for about 15-20 seconds. Not sure why they would not start the same way since the conditions are equal? After running the boat for a hour long cruise last week, the boat sat for 6 hours before I started them again. The port had no smoke at start up and the stb had a small amount[more of a puff]. Is it possible that it could be a weak starter? injectors? Thanks in advance for any advice.

What you are describing is a Diesel not getting fuel right away. Typically with your symptoms, the fuel system is leaking down when the engine sets and possibly sucking some air.

If you had a fuel pressure gauge it would help in your trouble shooting. I think you should start by inspecting your fuel lines and make sure you have no small leaks or loose fittings. Also check you engine oil to be sure you have no internal leaks (hold your dip stick flat and watch for the separation).

That should give you some basics to look at and not get to dirty from those nasty girls.
