500/520 DB official thread

I was talking with SWaterhouse yesterday (we winter at the same yard) and we were talking about why I am slower. He asked me how the condition was of the bottom of the boat. I didn’t really think it was that bad but today was prep for bottom paint day and I think he could be into something. There are a lot of thick runs and just a little rough in general. This may be my issue for losing some speed. It might be time to have it stripped and repainted.
Back with ablative or epoxy?

Tom are you also running half an inch less pitch on the port motor?

I wonder if that rough ablative is contributing to drag. When they recoated my boat last year with the Trinidad epoxy it was glass smooth.
That’s what I’m thinking. Although I don’t think it’s a problem with the ablative paint itself as much as 11 years of bottom paint in general. I don’t know what was on the boat when I bought it but it has three years of ablative paint on it now. When I bought my 340 DA it was a freshwater boat that was trailered so it did not have bottom paint on it. I epoxy barrier coated it and used ablative paint every year for the six years I had the boat and it never became rough like this bottom is. That being said I do think hard bottom paint stays smoother.

In New England with 6 months out of the water we pretty much need to use ablative and basically forced to recoat even if we don't need it. The result is a big build up.

Jeremy, I think going rate up here is around $180/foot.

Oh yea - If I'm out of the water more than a day or so - recoat....

$180ft! Ouch. Maybe it will have to wait for this market to cool down and the demand goes down.

I never got formal quote up here, so I may be off a bit, I talked about doing it to my 44DA and that was the guesstimate I was given. I can say Texas was much cheaper.

Its a ton of labor. Strip, clean/prepare, multiple coats of barrier (3-5 depending on product and application method) all applied in a very tight time window to avoid having to sand between coats. Then at least two coats of bottom paint. My boat was a full week and I think there were 4 guys on the crew. You also need to plan to pay to have the boat lifted and re-blocked so they can hit the areas at the keel and supports.

Then you add the "might as well's" of stripping the swim platform bare and staring that over etc - all adds time and expense.

If you go this route do the first coat of bottom paint in Blue, if the top coats are black, that way you can see when your getting thin in areas.

That all makes sense. It is a lot of work. I did everything you described minus the stripping on my 340da and it was a lot of work.

This was 2019 here in central Florida. I had to paint again last year when we rebuilt the running gear but I can't find that invoicing; things are a bit more now.

Don’t Judge but I might try to epoxy/glue it together for now until I can find a suitable replacement, pull the boat etc.

What do you guys recommend to use a epoxy/glue to make the repair?

Nice, did you just replace all 6?
Yes, both sides replaced. They are a bit pricey for what they are and one came a little scratched but I was able to buff it out. Overall good solution to the issue.

Need some advice....

Thinking of making a huge decision and buying a large piece of property. This would force us to sell the boat. Its a 2006 52DB. Around 400 hours on the QSM11s. All the electronics have been upgraded, as well as maintenance is up to date. All hoses, etc have been changed. Exterior is in decent shape. SeaDeck in the cockpit, bridge, and swim platform. The blue on the hull needs a compound and buff, and the bottom will need to be done next year. What is a realistic value of the boat?

Tim, where is the boat? I've seen them from 450-550k.
