Operating with an open leg is in my opinion dangerous. Given the 240 loads and the 110's the system draw is never balanced and breakers are going to be snapping constantly besides wiring over heating.
The expense of a Y adapter is the safe solution, even if you have to get a dumb one you'll be better off and so will your boat.
