5 Dead, 9 Hurt In Boating Accident, Jacksonville, Florida

This is tragic and will probably turn out to be very tragic with a good number of children involved I am guessing at this point.

I will not make any comments regarding boater judgment here or about possible violations, other then these comments.

If I was a Las Vegas Bookie I would not be taking bets as to there being no violations...and

The disgusting part here is that the media is nattering on about this being a narrow portion of the Inter-Coastal, which also does not have it marked as a no wake zone. The twenty five tug being tied up to the dock and empty, see the picture is also supposed to be somehow at fault.

They are reporting on just about anything other there the very likely possibly the 22 foot boat operator may have be responsible few violations

High School Senior Lobbies Legislature to “Stop the R-Word”
OKLAHOMA CITY – Shawnee High School Senior Alie Walsh lobbied state lawmakers today, giving a speech on the floor of the Oklahoma House of Representatives urging them to help prevent the use of derogatory terms to describe people with disabilities.

Alie, whose older sister Jenny has a disability, specifically urged legislators to discourage the use of the words “retarded” or “retard” as derogatory terms. “To me to hear someone use the word ‘retarded’ as a putdown just doesn’t line up, because I would never think of something that describes Jenny as a putdown,” Alie said. She noted her sister was the prom queen at Shawnee and participates in competitive swimming and dancing activities.

Alie said lawmakers and other adults can help by simply being good role models. “When kids hear teachers or role models use this word, they think it’s okay to use it – and it’s not okay,” Alie said.

Gov. Brad Henry also issued a proclamation in support of the effort, declaring March 31st to be “Spread the Word to End the ‘r’ Word Day” in Oklahoma. That proclamation declares that “when the words ‘retard’ or ‘retarded’ are used without thinking to mean something stupid or bad, it is hurtful to people who have disabilities and the people who love them” and it “perpetuates prejudice and discrimination towards people with disabilities.”

State Rep. Kris Steele, who invited Alie to speak to the House, praised her efforts. “Alie has shown great poise and maturity in fighting prejudice,” said Steele, R-Shawnee. “I believe it is incumbent upon us as elected officials to do our best to lead by example and I appreciate Alie reminding us of that responsibility.”

Sorry, my bad! But in my defense I don't consider people with disabilities retarded I consider them people with disabilities I personaly would never call someone with disabilities a retard or retarded however someone that takes 12-14 people on a 21 foot boat is well you know the 'R' word.

thats cool. I could only imagine if I had a family member that was mentally retarded how it would make me feel to hear that. My kids use to say it all the time and it just sounded bad. I think I have finally broke them of that bad habit.

By the ages of the people on board it sounds like college kids. need we say more?

I think the phrase "dumb asses" is more appropriate.

Good grief. One of the stories said they normally had a designated driver for the ride home but on this evening, they picked up a girl at the bar to drive them home... umm... yeah... How did that conversation go? "Hey uh... we are really drunk and need you to drive our overloaded boat home down the ICW (hick) but it'll be fun."

Technically they are correct, but the headline is a bit miss leading, as the tug was actually docked, empty, and anchored, as one would dock when face docking at a wharf.

"5 Killed, 9 Hurt As Boat Hits Tug"

The boat which hit the tug was actually heading North up the International Coastal Waterway (ICW), when it appears that it did a sudden near 90 degree turn east.
