I am looking at 2 different 240 SD's. The 2002 has 300 hours on a 6.2 MPI and the 2003 has 90 hours on a 5.7 MPI. I like the bigger motor option but should I be concerned with the 300 hours?

Regardless of the engine or engine hours, if choosing between two boats I would much rather have a boat that I know someone maintained properly than a low hour boat that didn't receive regular maintenance. If the boat is clean and the gel coat is nice and shiny, that's a good start. I also look at the engine compartment to see what shape that is in and then ask about the regular maintenance that has been performed. My 2002 240SD had 300+ hours on it when I sold it last spring. I also provided the buyer with my maintenance log which showed regular oil and filter changes on the engine as well as annual fluid changes and engine alignment checks on the outdrive.

Here are two pictures of mine I took when I listed it for sale so you can see it was in top condition.

As to which motor is better, the 5.0 is adequate in my opinion and always did a nice job for us in our 240SD even with 12 people on board. The 5.7 motor will also do a great job for you. But if the boat with the 6.2 that you are looking at has been well maintained then I would want that one because you can never have "too much" power.

The 6.2 is a stroked 5.7 done by Mercruiser's in-house flying monkeys. Personally, I'd want the engine that GM engineered, rather than the one that Merc fudged.

Thank you. Both of your replys were very helpful. The "slightly over 300 hours" turned out to be 369...:smt009
