5.0 engine in the 220 Sundeck...is it enough?

Thinking about trading for a new 2007 Sundeck 220. Dealer tells me that the 5.0 standard engine is "all that I'll ever need." However, in the past, I made the mistake of not getting enough motor. Anyone have the 5.0 or the 350 mag? Can you comment on fuel economy performance value etc.? Also, how about an opinion on the drives offered....Alpha 1 vs. Bravo III
Steve

I had a 2003 220SD with a 5.0 and Alpha drive. While I think the 5.0 is a good choice I would have been happier if it had the Bravo 3 drive. Getting up on plane is much easier. Can you sea trial them with both drive options? Where do you do your boating? Since you already got burned on the "not enough HP thing" and if money is not a concern than get the 350 Mag with the Bravo 3. Good luck, Brian

I would think the 5.0 in a 220 would be plenty I have a 5.0 with Bravo III in my 240SD and I think it's fine but there are others on here that have a 240SD with the 350 Mag

I had a 2002SD w/ 5.0L MPI Bravo III. It handled real nice with 3 to 4 persons on board and would even run close to 50 MPH if I dropped the hamer on it.

the major reason I traded out if it was the shallow v-hull. in rough bay waters it just pounded me to death.

I think the 5.0 w/ the bravo III is good. but I also thing that you should buy the biggest boat and motor you wallet will allow.

I have a 2006 220 SD BIII. I test drove both the 5.0 and the 350 mag. The 5.0 ran nice but the 350 was nicer. I usually have 4 to 8 on my boat and the 350 was the right pick for me.

I would always get as much motor as you can afford.

With the upgraded motor and stereo my was an extra $2000.

Good luck

Over all the 350Mag and B3 drive at 300hp would be the superior combination. If your on a budget the 5.0 MPI still produces 260HP and with the addition of the B3 you get great handling and pulling power. I had my props balanced and slight cup put in them so coming out of the hole increased considerably. I can't run 50 any more but I never cared to run at that speed any way.

I would not recommend the 6.2 in the boat because of the cost factor vs return. The extra 2-3K price tag for the additional 20 HP just does not make financial good sense.

As to the shallow v hull on the 220 pounding you to death, that is a pretty true statement depending on your driving style and conditions. Sometimes you just have to drive around swells and not try to plow through them. My boat has seen gulf waters, bay waters and lots of lakes and rivers and I have enjoyed it greatly. It's a good all around boat. :smt024

We have a 240 SD with the 260 hp BIII. We usually have 3 - 7 people on board and it's been fine for us. We usually cruise around 25 mph or so - decent on gas, etc.

I don't know what the bigger engine burns vs. the 260 when it comes to gas... :smt017

Good luck!

Fuel consumption goes up with power. If your 5.0 is pushing your 240 at 25 MPH, my 540 pushing my 240 at 25 MPH will be burning about the same thing.

At some point your 5.0 will be working as hard as it possibly can and pushing the 240, say 45 MPH. My 540 will be pushing my 240 45 MPH. but not working near as hard. But as I go up the next 5, 10, 20 MPH, it'll require much more power which means much more fuel.

It's not an exact science since there is also drive ability differences like more work vs less work to get on plane etc.

I would agree however, if you're concerned about power, I would think the 220 would be much better suited with a 350 MAG and BIII. Of course it' hard for me to be impartial or subjective because I've never been in one with a small block of any kind. Mine came with a 7.4 MPI and of course now it has something a little different.

Which by the way, is always for sale. Nothing material is without a price.
