480 DB Owners Club

If you are gong via the ditch. You better check the lock and bridges. I heard rumor they were shutting down one of the locks for maintenance and it will be out for quite some time. You might have to go the long way. Please verify as I'm not 100%, but might be about 95%

Mike-

I would think it’s in the Parts Manual. They are Grohe’s on the 58, but that may be no help to you…

You are correct. Very lightly inscribed on the back of the faucet is the Grohe name. Thank you for your response.

In response to MQUIET - 2 January 2022 to 31 March 2022 is when the report said they are going out of service. TY for the advice. Would be a bummer to start that cruise off and have to turn around, back-track and go the longer way.

Only downside is the no/minimum wake is in effect this time of year in most of the area.

Need some help with insurance for our soon to be 480DB.

We received one quote for insurance for our 480DB @6k. Seems kind of high to me. I would like to ask for some guidance on where people turn to insure their 480's. We don't need anything fancy, just the basics. I check NBOA and Progressive and they do not accept boats this size. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. We will most likely go with the one I consider expensive and change out when we find a better alternative.
Thanks,
Vince

I'm with New Hampshire through Gallagher Charter Lakes for under $1500/year but I'm on the Chesapeake with a winter layup period.

Try Global Marine. Have been with them a while now. No complaints or price hikes.

Florida - I think all of us in Fl are paying quite exorbitant premiums. I'm into it for over $6000...
I understand the number one reason for the higher premiums is lightning.
Higher prices are moving across the nation..

This is all great info as we have binded a policy as we took delivery of the boat, but dont like the price. So we will be looking into a couple of the carriers listed here. Thanks so much for the help!

Re: Radar question....
Thanks for the replies gents. I didn’t get email notifications of your posts and only see them today.

Your advice sounds on-target. I’ll measure the angle. Also, the point about usage is good - Sea Casa is docked bayside in Key Largo so we have a variety of speed conditions - from open water normal cruise to no wake zones, some narrow channels, etc. so the radar must accommodate a range of operating angles of the 480. At the current forward-down setting, imaging aft at slow speeds is not so good (aft scan angle is high). My plan now is to make some non-permanent adjustments and observe results. Then, when the best angle is known, add a Sea View wedge of the appropriate angle - they offer 2, 4 and 6 degree wedges.

The St Lucie lock is closed. Here’s the Army Corp of Engineers link.

Yacht insurance costs in Florida - ugh! In addition to lightning we have hurricanes and year-round use (read: greater risk). My 480’s policy is through United Marine Underwriters and, including a 2021 Achilles dinghy and a 20 HP Tohatsu, the cost is just short of $7,000/year and that was the cheapest available for this area including Bahamas coverage.

Salon window covering… as shown in the photo, our coverings are a typical black, screen-like cover that provides some privacy and shade, lets light in and visibility out. The forward cover is aging and starting to deteriorate so we’re going to replace it. We dock facing south, into the FL sun, so I’m interested in alternative forward widow coverings that will let less light through and, by extension, not as much heat so our AC’s work less especially in the summer. Since our shore power is metered, we’d save some bucks on the monthly bill too. What’s working well for you?

I use a insulation material that I got from Home Depot. It cut it to size and lay under my screen. It has a silver backing which does not present great, but it helps tremendously in the summer heat.

I have a black Phifertex cover, a tan Sunbrella cover and the reflective insulation like Matt uses. The reflective insulation under the Phifertex absolutely works the best to keep the heat down but at the expense of being able to see out the front windows. It also leaves stains on the glass if it gets water trapped behind it then heats up.

I rarely use the Sunbrella windshield cover.

I’m going to replace my interior window blinds in the salon area. Has anybody replaced them and if so….who did you use? I believe my blinds are the originals and past time to get new ones.
Keith

I would think any blinds company would work. I had to order new eleastic straps and carriers for my salon shade. I will find the company as they will also make blinds and shades. Give me the weekend to respond.
