Several possibilities: Torn Shaft seal, Worn shaft packing, Burst in a thru-hull water hose, a shore water connection with too much pressure may have burst (Happened to me once on a previous boat. Fortunately I was on the boat when it happened. No damage, but it could have sunk the boat.) There are lots of things that can go wrong on a boat!

My original thought would be a through hull water hose. The article says they stopped for lunch, which would lead me to believe it was not parked long. If the boat was taking on water prior to docking it, an alarm should have gone off when the emergency bilge kicked on....assuming it worked. It would be nice to know. By the way they pulled the boat away after floating it, my guess is was a through hull.

I agree with you. I'm amazed they were able to drive on after refloating the boat. Sure would like to know the cause of their taking on water.

I can assure that the boat was not driven away. It was submerged to the rub rails, which would require complete overall of the engines and electronic components in the engine room.

The video has me wondering about my through hull hoses.

The last line of the article said it was towed from the restaurant's dock.

There's no way this boat was going anywhere under it's own power when it was this far down in the water.

Ok, my 3000 hour service is complete. Aftercoolers pressure tested, lashed valves, oil, filters, impellers, and replaced worn tubes and hoses. Going on the hill for a couple of weeks to bottom paint and inspect. Then back in the water and let summer begin!

I was on land this winter but was at the boat atleast one day every weekend but about three. Replaced more Raymarine electronics with Furuno, only have the A/P to do next winter. Just waiting on props to get done then cut the wrap, pretty up the waterline and have the hull waxed. Once in the water we're digging into my Port exhaust manifold leak...

Have two week long trips planned this summer, the first is all booked and confirmed. Waiting on others to get their act together for the second.

I have a month booked in Morehead and then off to Baldhead Island at the end of June.

I am thinking about changing the through engine hull hoses after seeing the video of the 480 sinking. I have no idea if these hoses are standard order parts or do I get them cut to length from a diesel shop. Mine appear to be rigid and hard to bend and form. How hard is it to change them? Should I leave them for a mechanic to change?

I replaced mine a few years ago. You can get them in 12.5' lengths if purchased from marine supply houses. That was just barely long enough for the port side and fine for the starboard. They are 2.5" ID wire reinforced.

Edit: That was for QSM's, not sure if the strainers are mounted in a different location for CAT engines.

Do any of you have a Sub-Zero refridge with a control like this picture? It is on the bottom front of the unit. I don't know how to rotate the picture below so it shows horizontal rather than vertical. As with many of the systems on the boat we bought in October, I do not have the owners manual or any other documentation so I am having a time trying to figure out how this works. I can't find a model number anywhere that I have looked so far, so I have been unable to find anything online. Help!

Mike,
Cant help with the Sub Zero question... but simply edit the picture. Crop it slightly and it will post correctly.
